Katrina Elizabeth "Kate" DiCamillo (born March 25, 1964 in Philadelphia ) is an American writer, best known for her award-winning children's books.

Life

When Kate DiCamillo was five years old, her father left the family. She still struggles with this loss to this day. She studied English literature in Florida and now lives as a freelance writer in Minneapolis. With her first two award-winning children's books "Winn-Dixie" and "Kentucky-Star" she achieved her international breakthrough. For Despereaux - From someone who set out to unlearn the fear , the author was honored with the 2004 Newbery Medal . The book, which was nominated for the German Youth Literature Award in 2005, served as the basis for the movie Despereaux - The Little Mice Hero . In 2019 DiCamillo was awarded the Regina Medal .
