Newbery Medal

The Newbery Medal is an American literary award given since 1922 by the Association for Library Service to Children , a subgroup of the American Library Association . Together with the Caldecott Medal , this award is the most prestigious award for children's literature in the United States. The award is named after John Newbery , an 18th century publicist and the builder of the first libraries. Before 2000 ( Michael L. Printz Award ) it included both children's and youth books.

A main prize ( Newbery Medal ) and several honorary awards ( Newbery Honor ) are awarded each year .
