Edward Irving Wortis (born December 23, 1937 in New York , NY ) is an American author of books for children and young people. His pseudonym is Avi .

Life

Edward Irving Wortis was born in 1937 in New York City with his twin sister Emily Wortis Leider (also a writer). His father Joseph Wortis was a psychiatrist and his mother Helen Zunser Wortis was a social worker. He grew up in Brooklyn , where his family moved a year after he was born. As a child, his sister gave him the nickname Avi , which he later adopted as a pseudonym.

His grandfathers were both writers and his grandmother a playwright. In interviews, he recalled that his mother read to him and his sister every evening and that he always went to the city library on Fridays. His brother Henry was considered a genius; he went to university at the age of 15 and later became a scientist. Irving Wortis is the cousin of actor and Oscar winner Alan Arkin .

After Irving Wortis failed at Stuyvesant High School, his parents sent him to the small private Elisabeth Irwin High School. There he learned from his tutor Ella Ratner, to whom he, according to his own statements, owes his later literary success. It turned out that he had a symptom of agrafy such that he misspelled or twisted words.

He initially worked in various craft professions, but was also active as a writer. Initially only active as a playwright, he later also wrote for his own children. He published various children's and youth books for all age groups and is now one of the best-known authors of children's and youth literature .

After being in the 1980s and 1990s in Providence ( Rhode Iceland had lived), Avi now lives with his wife Linda Wright Cruise in Denver ( Colorado ).
