Katherine Alice Applegate (born October 9, 1956 in Ann Arbor , Michigan ) is an American author of books for young people . She mostly publishes under the author name KA Applegate , but has also used various pseudonyms , including Katherine Kendall , AR Plumb and Nicholas Stevens . She is best known for her youth science fiction series Animorphs .

Life

Applegate studied veterinary medicine before she decided to become a writer. She began to write girls' books and romance novels in series from 1993, sometimes under a pseudonym, and she was also the author of two Disney book series.

The first books in the Animorphs series that made her famous were written by Applegate with her husband, the writer Michael Grant , whom she met at the University of Texas college . In the meantime over 50 volumes of the main series have appeared, more in several minor series, a large part of which has been translated into German. The series is about a group of young people who are given the gift of a dying alien to transform themselves into any animal they touch. Animorphs has now also been adapted as a Nickelodeon television series.

Everworld is a 12-volume series of teenage fantasy novels in which four children from our world and a girl from the fantasy world Everworld have to endure all sorts of dangerous adventures.

In 2007, her novel Home of the Brave about a Sudanese refugee in the USA won the Golden Kite Award from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators .

Her novel The One and Only Ivan was awarded the Newbery Medal in 2013 . The novel is told from the perspective of a gorilla who has been sitting lonely in a glass cage in a shopping center as a visitor attraction for many years. The novel was inspired by a report in the New York Times about the legal battle over the fate of the gorilla Ivan, who had been the showpiece in the B & I Shopping Mall in Tacoma for 26 years . The film version of The Only True Ivan by director Thea Sharrock, a mixture of animation and real film, is scheduled to start in the USA in August 2020.

Applegate also uses a non-human narrator in Wishtree from 2017, here it is Red, an old oak tree who, together with some tree dwellers, tries to help a 10-year-old Muslim girl who is suffering from the hostility of a xenophobic environment - while Red is among the has to suffer increasingly frequent drought summer.

In addition to the series and books published under his own name, Applegate published under a pseudonym:

  • as LE Blair: Girl Talk Series
  • as Katherine Kendall romance novels for Harlequin Publishing
  • as Beth Kincaid: Silver Creek Riders Series
  • as AR Plumb and under its own name: Disney's Aladdin
  • as Pat Pollari: Barf-O-Rama series

Applegate has two daughters. The family lives in Tiburon , California .
