Tiburon is a city in Marin County in the US state of California with 8962 inhabitants (as of 2010). The approximately 34.2 km² urban area is located on a peninsula on the western edge of the Bay of San Francisco .
The name of the city is derived from the Spanish word tiburón for shark and initially referred to the entire peninsula. It is believed to refer to the local occurrence of leopard sharks in the waters around the peninsula.
Until 1941, Tiburon was the southernmost terminus of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad . From here, loads - mainly wood - were transported via barges to San Francisco and other cities on the bay.
Today, Tiburon is one of the cities for commuting to San Francisco, accessible by high-speed ferries as well as Highway 101 . Due to its attractiveness for tourists, mainly restaurants and small shops have settled in Tiburon.

The geographic coordinates of Tiburon are 37.89 ° North, 122.47 ° West. The city lies on a peninsula, which is enclosed in the east and southeast by the Bay of San Francisco and in the southwest by Richardson Bay . The land area of Tiburon is 4.4 square miles (11 km²) with an additional 8.7 square miles (23 km²) is water.
In the northwest, Tiburon is directly connected to Strawberry (which shares a zip code with Mill Valley ), in the southeast the urban area borders on Belvedere , which was formerly an independent island and is now connected to Tiburon by a dam. To the north, Tiburon borders on Corte Madera , from which it is separated by Highway 101 .

In the United States Census 2010 , a census on April 1, 2010, 8,962 residents were determined. The largest group of the population are whites with a share of 88.1%. In addition there are 5.6% Asians , 4.1% mixed race and 0.9% African American .
According to the 2010 census, 46.8% of Tiburon's residents are male and 53.2% female. Of the 3729 households, 31.1% have children under the age of 18. Mixed-sex couples live together in 56.7% of these households, single women live in 7.5% and single men live in 2.3% of households.
The total population of Tiburon consists of 24.0% people under the age of 18, 3.3% are between 18 and 24 years old, 17.7% are 25 to 44 years old, 33.9% are 35 to 64 years old and 21 , 2% are 65 years of age or older. The mean age of the residents of Tiburon is 48.0 years.
economy
Tiburon's economy today is characterized by a large number of small boutiques and restaurants, which are primarily aimed at business with tourists. Most of these shops and eateries are on Main Street, right by the ferry terminal. In 2004, Tiburon gained national fame when it became the first city in the world to ban the use of trans fatty acids in all of its 18 restaurants. It was the beginning of a movement that later spread to other parts of the United States.
On Friday evenings in spring and summer, Main Street in the heart of Tiburon will be closed to car traffic and converted into a restaurant mile. During these "Friday Nights on Main" the local restaurants and bars offer their guests outdoor entertainment with live music.
