The Richardson Bay is a shallow, species-rich foothills of the San Francisco Bay , named after William A. Richardson , a captain, businessman and landowner from the first half of the 19th century. The bay stretches for a length of about five kilometers and a width of about three kilometers.

Despite the heavy urban use of its surrounding land, the bay is a breeding and migration area for a large number of aquatic and coastal bird species. Because about 40,000 birds are sighted here every year  , including endangered species such as Rallus longirostris obsoletus ( California Clapper Rail ), Richardson Bay was classified as an Important Bird Area .

From the late 1960s to the 1980s, Aramburu Island , created by landfills in the northwestern area of Richardson Bay, was a resting place for seals . While around 30 percent of the seal population in the Bay of San Francisco sought refuge on Aramburu Island at times, they have completely disappeared from the island to this day. This is attributed to the increasingly disruptive human influences and the siltation of a nearby deep water channel in the bay.

Large areas of the bay are overgrown with seaweed , making Richardson Bay one of the most important aquatic plants in Northern California. Research in the bay, funded by the San Francisco Foundation in cooperation with San Francisco State University , has been investigating the extent to which water depths affect seaweed planting since 2007.

In the early 1960s, the National Audubon Society, a non-profit environmental organization, purchased 369 acres and established the Richardson Bay Sanctuary .
