Träsch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Träsch , also known as Bätzi or Bätziwasser, is a schnapps made from pome fruit. In Central Switzerland, it is distilled mainly from pears and partly from apples and contains up to 78 percent alcohol by volume . It used to be distilled from the marc from the must production. Since today's industrial cider presses leave too little liquid in the marc, it is mainly made from whole pears and apples. The pomace is still traditionally used today on the farms with old cider presses. Also in Central Switzerland, Träsch is mainly drunk mixed with light coffee, also affectionately known as “Black”, “Kaffi Träsch”, “Birli Träsch” or “Coffee ready”. The term is only rarely used for schnapps made from grape marc .
