content

“Brothers are the wolves. They love one another like brothers and if you understand their language and speak to them, they will be like brothers to you too. "

The story is divided into three chapters, with the first "Amaroq, the wolf" describing Julie's current situation, the second chapter, "Julie, the girl", a flashback and dealing with her childhood in the third chapter "Kapugen, der Hunter "to continue the story from the first chapter.

Julie / Miyax is an Eskimo girl who stands between modern Alaska and the tradition of the Eskimo. She grew up on the tundra with her father Kapugen in the company of seal hunters until she had to go to school. She moves in with her strict aunt, since there is no school nearby, but learns that her father has not returned from a hunt and is now dead. She is told that if she married a boy named Daniel after her 13th birthday, she could move away from her aunt, which she does. Once there, she notices that Daniel is mentally a bit retarded. She accepts that until he tries to rape her, after which she flees and runs into the wilderness. Her destination is San Francisco, where her pen pal lives. She wanders the tundra for days, trying, now half starved, to remember the techniques for survival on the tundra that she had learned in her childhood. When she finally meets a wolf pack, she remembers her father's words: "Brothers are wolves." She communicates with the wolves for food, water, and other essentials for survival.

When she is finally confronted with the question of whether she wants to return to the human world, the answer is not easy for her.
