Island of the Blue Dolphins
Island of the Blue Dolphins (original title: Island of the Blue Dolphins ) is a short story by Scott O'Dell and the author's first work from 1960. It was first published in Germany in 1962. The youth book, which has been translated into eleven languages, is considered a global success and was awarded the German Youth Literature Prize in 1963 . It is based on the story of the missing from San Nicolas .
It tells the story of a 12-year-old Indian girl named Karana (Indian name Won-a-pa-lei , in German the girl with long black hair ) who is alone with her brother - who, however, is killed by wild dogs in the first year left behind on a Pacific island. Karana spends 18 years on the island and ends up being brought to the island by two “white men” to which her tribe had fled.
On July 3, 1964, a film version of "The Island of the Blue Dolphins" premiered. James B. Clark directed and starred Celia Kaye as Karana. Jane Klove and Ted Sherdeman adapted O'Dell's novel for the script. The film was produced by Robert B. Radnitz and Universal Pictures on a budget. The reviews were divided, however Celia Kaye received a Golden Globe Award for Best Young Actress in 1965 for her role as Karana.
The book is easy to read by children and young people and is therefore often used as school reading.
O'Dell also wrote a sequel to the book entitled The Abandoned Boat on the Beach , which was awarded the Austrian State Prize for Children's and Young Adult Literature in 1978 .
The book was also awarded the Newbery Medal.
