The Abandoned Boat on the Beach ( Zia ) is a novel by the American youth author Scott O'Dell from 1976. This title is the sequel to the book Island of the Blue Dolphins .

Zia has heard a lot from her aunt Karana, who has lived on the island of the blue dolphins for a long time. She is determined to bring her back to the mainland, where Zia's tribe live on a Franciscan mission. To get to the island, Zia and her brother Mando use a whaling boat that they found on the beach and hidden and prepared in a lagoon. However, they do not make it to the island, but are first picked up by the whalers; however, they manage to flee back to the mainland. A short time later, an American captain manages to get Karana, who then moves to the mission. In the meantime, the tribe living in the mission have left, which the Americans see as a rebellion. Although Zia did not flee herself, she was arrested and imprisoned as one of the responsible persons, but was freed again by a Franciscan priest. The Franciscans succeed in settling the conflict between the Indians and Americans, but the discontent of the returned Indians continues to grow due to the harshness and egocentricity of the mission leaders. After something bad happened to Karana, Zia and Rontu-Aru flee back to her former home village.

The first hardback edition was published by Houghton Mifflin in 1976 , followed by a paperback version by Laurel Leaf in 1978 .

The novel was translated into German by Inge M. Artl and published in 1978 by Benziger (Germany) and Obelisk-Verlag (Austria). A licensed edition in paperback format has been published by dtv Junior since 1981 , of which there were 15 editions up to 1995.

Awards

The book was shortlisted ( Notable Books ) by the American Library Association (ALA) and named A Children's Book of the Year 1978 by the Child Study Association .

The German translation was awarded the Austrian Children's and Youth Book Prize. In addition, it was voted Book of the Month by the German Academy for Children's and Youth Literature, Volkach .
