Elizabeth Jane Coatsworth (born May 31, 1893 in Buffalo , † August 31, 1986 ) was an American writer.

Coatsworth was taken on extensive journeys by her parents from a very early age. She got to know the Alps and the Egyptian desert at the age of five and saw the ruins of Aztec buildings in Mexico when she was twelve. Until she was eighteen she attended Buffalo Seminary , then Vassar College , which she graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 1915. At Columbia University she received her master's degree in 1916. With her mother (the father had died in 1912), she undertook a year and a half journey through China, Korea, Japan and Indonesia, during which she visited Buddhist monasteries and temples.

In the 1920s, Coatsworth began her writing career as a children's book writer with The Cat and the Captain . In 1929, at the age of 36, she married Henry Beston , a natural history writer, with whom she had two daughters. The family alternated between living in an old house in Hingham, Massachusetts and on Chimney Farm in Maine. Overall, Coatsworth has published more than 100 books in the course of her fifty-year career as a writer, in addition to picture books, books for children and young people, as well as volumes of poetry, short stories, novels and autobiographical works.
