Rocker was born in London in 1907 and grew up in the East End there , in the Stepney district , until the end of 1918 . From the beginning of 1919 to 1928 he lived with his family in Berlin . As a child he got to know personalities of international anarchism, such as Prince Kropotkin (the founder of communist anarchism ), Errico Malatesta , Augustin Souchy , Emma Goldman , Alexander Berkman , Franz Pfemfert , Agnes Smedley , Erich and Zenzl Mühsam , Nestor Machno , Max Nettlau and Buenaventura Durruti . In 1929 he emigrated to the USA and worked as a graphic artist . In 1938 he started his own business and illustrated numerous children's books.
