Dave Matthews (jazz musician)

Dave Matthews (actually David Matthews, born June 6, 1911 in Chagrin Falls , Oklahoma , † 1997 ) was an American jazz saxophonist (tenor, alto), composer and arranger of swing .

Matthews studied at the University of Oklahoma and the Musical College in Chicago. He played alto saxophone with Ben Pollack in 1935 , with Jimmy Dorsey from 1936 to 1937 , with Benny Goodman from 1937 to 1939 , with Harry James from 1939 to 1941 and with Hal McIntyre in 1941/42 . After that he mainly played tenor saxophone with Woody Herman (1942/43), Stan Kenton and Charlie Barnet (1944). He then worked mostly as an arranger in New York and California, where he was based on Duke Ellington . Occasionally he played with his own bands.

He recorded with the aforementioned big bands and with Bud Freeman , Lionel Hampton , Jimmy Noone , Jack Teagarden , Hot Lips Page, among others .

He is not to be confused with the guitarist and singer-songwriter Dave Matthews .
