Live and act
Hal McIntyre first worked in local bands in Connecticut and formed his first band, an Octet , in 1935 . In 1937 he played for Benny Goodman for a short time and was then hired by Glenn Miller ; At that time he was one of the founding members of the Glenn Miller Orchestra , in which he played from 1937 to 1941. Glenn Miller supported him financially in forming his own orchestra; his McIntyre Orchestra made his debut in New Rochelle (New York) in 1941 and became known for his engagement at the Glen Island Casino . The ensemble included the band singers Helen Ward , Gloria Van, Ruth Gaylor and Al Nobel as well as the musicians Bobby Jones , Eddie Safranski , Louis Mucci , Bobby Guyer and Allen Eager ; Arrangers were Dave Matthews, Billy May , Ralph Flanagan and Howard Gibeling. The orchestra, which was voted one of the most promising bands of the years 1942 and 1943 in a college poll on the Billboard and promoted itself with The Band that America Loves , played mainly in the large ballrooms such as the Hollywood Palladium ; in the final phase of the Second World War it also played outside the USA as part of troop support. Recordings were made for Cosmo and Victor Records . McIntyre was able to keep the orchestra up into the 1950s; In 1952 his orchestra accompanied The Mills Brothers on their successful track "Glow Worm".
McIntyre moved to the West Coast in the late 1950s and died of a house fire in 1959. His son Hal Jr. had a big band in the Boston area in the 1970s that played the arrangements of the Original McIntyre Orchestra.
