Hooters restaurant

Hooters is a global US system catering chain with offers such as hamburgers and chicken wings . In contrast to fast food chains, however, Hooters is not a fast food restaurant , but belongs to the full-service segment of system catering. This means that food and drinks are served at the table and the guest is intended to stay in the restaurant for a relatively long time.

Company history

Six entrepreneurs founded Hooters, Inc. in 1983 , based in Clearwater , Florida , and opened the first Hooters Beach Bar there in October 1983. On October 4th, 2008 the company celebrated its 25th anniversary.

In 1984 the company Hooters of America, Inc was founded in Atlanta , which was initially a franchisee . It acquired in 2001 by Hooters, Inc. brand Hooters and therefore all commercial rights to Hooters products. Most Hooters restaurants around the world are either operated by Hooters of America (Atlanta) themselves or (outside of the US consistently) are licensed as a franchisor. From March 2003 on, Hooters of America operated the airline Hooters Air , which offered various domestic flights to popular vacation destinations. In January 2006, however, regular flight operations were discontinued.

The still existing independent company Hooters, Inc. (Clearwater) currently operates several Hooters restaurants in Florida , New York (state) and Chicago, as well as the Hooters Casino Hotel ( hotel operation with an attached casino ) in Las Vegas , Paradise (Nevada ), which opened in February 2006 ) .

In January 2010 there were 469 Hooters restaurants in 28 countries on all continents worldwide, with almost 25,000 employees, including around 15,000 "Hooters Girls". In late 2009, the first Hooters restaurant in South Africa, Durban, opened. In Europe, Hooters is represented in Germany , Austria , Switzerland , the Czech Republic , Hungary and the United Kingdom . Hooters of America, Inc.'s annual revenue is estimated to be approximately $ 275 million, and that of all Hooters restaurants combined is estimated to be about ten times that.

Hooters is known for the provocative uniforms and the behavior (e.g. dance routines ) of its exclusively female waiters (Hooters Girls) in the Hooters sports bars . The work clothing is similar to that of cheerleaders and consists of tight orange shorts , sheer tights or leggings , sports socks, a white low-cut tank top with an owl printed on it, and sneakers. On Fridays, top and shorts in the USA are traditionally worn in black. At first, the tops were made of cotton and were knotted up so that the breasts were particularly emphasized and the waitresses worked without their belly. In the 1990s, people switched to the tight-fitting, belly-covering tops made of elastane that are still common today . Miss Hooters International is elected annually in the USA ; Hooters girls from all branches around the world that have previously won the contest in their country or state can apply. In 2009 the election for Miss Hooters International took place in Hollywood (Florida) . The provocative demeanor of the Hooters girls is criticized as sexist by women's associations . In the US, the fact that no men are hired as waiters has led to some lawsuits for gender discrimination in the workplace.

The bars, which are furnished in the style of a sports bar , are all equipped with large LCD televisions on which current sporting events are broadcast. Merchandising products such as T-shirts , baseball caps and annual calendars with bikini photos of selected Hooters girls are sold in restaurants and by mail order .

Hooters of America, Inc. launched an initiative called Operation Let Freedom Wing , in which the Hooters calendar girls and pop artists like UC3 and Angela Lanza are sent to visit troops on American missions abroad.

Orange - the company's external appearance

The current logo, furnishings, uniform and food are almost unchanged from the original Hooters restaurant. According to the company, the name "Hooters" comes from the colloquial English term for owl, which can also be found in the logo (the word was derived from the sound "hoo", onomatopoeic for the owl's call). However, the word "Hooters" is also a slang term for the female breast. Legend has it that the founders were inspired by the club color of their favorite Florida football team when they opted for orange.

Food and drinks offered

The menu at a Hooters restaurant consists mostly of chicken wings , burgers , sandwiches , seafood, and salads . The company advertises its well-known chicken wings in combination with several self-made sauces in different degrees of heat and flavors. Furthermore, quesadillas , nachos , soups , spare ribs and various desserts are on the menu. Although Hooters aims to have a uniform menu in all restaurants, there are country-specific differences. So you can find in Germany and Austria z. B. no oysters , clams or crabs .

In addition to soft drinks and mineral water, the USA also offers its own Hooters energy drink. In Germany, the range of drinks includes soft drinks, cocktails, spirits, long drinks and various local and international beers as well as a selection of different wines.

Hooters in German-speaking countries

Germany

In Germany, Hooters is represented in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen and, since January 28, 2018, on the Reeperbahn in Hamburg . In the meantime, there were restaurants in Bochum , Berlin , Düsseldorf , Karlsruhe , Cologne , Potsdam , Neunkirchen (Saar) and in Frankfurt am Main Airport , but they were all closed again.

Austria

There are currently four Hooters branches in Austria ( Oberwart , Graz -Liebenau, Graz-Gösting and Sankt Lorenzen im Mürz valley ). A branch in Vienna was closed in 2007, among other things because the changeover from ceramic to plastic tableware prescribed by the franchisor could not be implemented in downtown Vienna.

Switzerland

The first Hooters in Switzerland opened in Interlaken . Another branch is located in Zurich .
