Sideways (dt .: "sideways") is an American feature film by Alexander Payne from the year 2004 . The script, written by Payne and Jim Taylor , is based on the novel of the same name by the American writer and screenwriter Rex Pickett .

action

The divorced English teacher and wine lover Miles, the three years has been writing a novel, and his best friend Jack, who considers himself as an actor for commercials about water while consumed by a long-deposed series role, take a week-long trip to the vineyards of California after Santa Ynez Valley . The two have known each other since their time at the University of San Diego . Miles plans to drive from one vineyard to the next, enjoy extensive wine tastings, philosophize about wine, eat well, and play golf. After the trip, Jack plans to marry his wealthy Armenian girlfriend and then join his father-in-law's real estate agent. He wants to have fun on the trip and have a few more adventures with women before the wedding.

Before the actual trip, they both visit Miles 'single mother, who steals Miles' money from a drawer. Miles makes it clear that he is still suffering greatly from the divorce from his ex-wife.

On the trip they meet the wine seller Stephanie and the waitress Maya, who turns out to be a proven wine connoisseur. While Jack flirts violently with the fun-loving Stephanie, turns day into night and is close to canceling the wedding because he does not want to give up his Playboy existence, Miles and Maya fall in love. Miles, however, is shy and only approaches her carefully.

During a picnic, Miles accidentally reveals Jack's upcoming wedding to Maya. Maya turns away from Miles, disappointed. When Stephanie finds out about this, she gets angry and breaks Jack's nose with a motorcycle helmet. Shortly thereafter, Miles learns that his novel will not be published. On the final evening, Jack embarks on another sexual adventure, which gets him and Miles into trouble again. He and Jack end their trip and present Jack's future in-laws with a broken nose as a result of a car accident. At the wedding, Miles meets his ex-wife Victoria again, who is married to an attractive man and is expecting a child from him.

Miles only regains courage when he gets back in touch with Maya after a message on his answering machine. She read his letter and manuscript, which she liked. The film ends when he stands in front of her door and knocks. It remains to be seen whether she is at home, whether she opens it for him and how things will go on with the two of them.

Reviews

The film dienst wrote that the film was “entertaining” and “full of irresistible charm and gentle wisdom. Behind the comedy of the events, a loving, precise description of human idiosyncrasies and weaknesses emerges that are seldom found in Hollywood films. ” Spiegel Online judged:“ It doesn't take the elitist taste buds of a connoisseur to discover the warm interior of Sideways . Even a layperson can aptly describe the experience of this full-bodied Americana adventure: At first it bites heavily on the tongue, but the finish is unexpectedly smooth. "
