Phedon Papamichael Jr. ( Greek Φαίδων Παπαμιχαήλ Fedon Papamichail , born February 1962 in Athens , Greece ) is a Greek cameraman and director .

Career

Phedon Papamichael Jr. was born in Athens in 1962 as the son of the Greek art director Phedon Papamichael. At the age of four, the father moved the family to Los Angeles to work for his cousin John Cassavetes . However, the parents separated and Papamichael left his father and moved with his mother to Munich , where he stayed until he graduated from university in 1982. It was only after he sent his father a few photos of him that he invited him to Hollywood in 1983. However, Papamichael initially spent six months in New York before moving to Los Angeles. After working as a photographer in Germany, including for magazines such as Stern , finding a job in Hollywood was much more difficult. He earned just under $ 400 a month and lived on it while he worked as a cameraman for smaller film projects at UCLA, sometimes unpaid. And despite the attempt to apply for an assistant job through interviews with well-known cameramen such as Theo van de Sande , Robby Müller and Mikael Salomon , he did not get any of these jobs because he had also not previously worked as a cameraman. His uncle Nick Cassavetes recommended him to advertise in the daily Dramalogue in order to get a job. It wasn't long before he was allowed to direct the camera on a UCLA graduation film.

Subsequently, Roger Corman became aware of him and Papamichael made some low-budget films for this late 1980s . In some cases, the films were shot in 15 days, with working days of 16 to 18 hours, with almost 60 shots being shot. Corman himself was less interested in the quality than the fact that there were enough naked and dead people to be seen. From there, Papamichael was able to gain so much experience that he took over the camera in films like Trabbi goes to Hollywood , Colors of Crime and Cool Runnings .

In 1992 Papamichael tried his hand at directing the thriller Colors of Crime . As a cameraman he hired the later Oscar winner Wally Pfister , whom he had met during his time at Corman. In total, Papamichael then worked on four other films, namely Tödliche Bilder , From Within , Arcadia Lost and Lost Angeles as a director.

Phedon Papamichael is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers and has previously received an ASC nomination for Wild Palms and Rusta - Planet of Tears .
