The Weather Man is an American drama by Gore Verbinski from the year 2005 . The focus of the film is a man who has to come to terms with the fact that his marriage has failed. Professionally he is successful, but his private life consists of a long series of humiliating and depressing experiences.

action

The first scene of the film shows David standing in front of a mirror. He practices the smile that he will later show on his television appearance. Immediately afterwards, however, his face changes to an anxious, worried expression. It becomes clear that the distressed expression is the more honest one.

Then there are scenes that show David doing his everyday life. You can see him at one of his appearances as a weather announcer . He completes the performance very confidently. Then he is the chauffeur for his daughter, in a later scene he also does a driving service for the son. He accompanies his father to a health check-up, and for the first time there is a turning point in everyday life. The father reports that the doctor's examination gave poor results and that he has malignant lymphoma .

David receives an invitation for an interview from a New York TV station. It's about a job as a weather announcer on the popular show "Hello America". David's previous job is well paid, but the New York job would still mean a significant increase in his income.

He travels to New York with his daughter and father. He's completing his interview, and the father is undergoing another health check-up. The interview goes passably, but the father is informed that he only has a few months to live.

While the three of them are still in New York, the father takes a call from Chicago in which he is informed that David's son Mike has been arrested by the police at home. There was an argument between him and his supervisor, in which the last testimony was against testimony. The supervisor said Mike tried to steal a wallet from him while Mike said the supervisor approached him immorally.

David's mother holds a "lifetime funeral" in honor of her husband. This is an event designed like a funeral while the person at the center of the event is still alive. At this event, David begins a speech that begins with these words: "When I think of my father, I think of Bob Seger's 'Like a Rock'." David cannot continue the speech because of a power failure.

David visits his son's carer. As proof of his entanglement, he brings the sweater that he gave to the son. David strongly reproaches the supervisor, and a fight ensues in which he has to take a hard time. In a subsequent scene, David's father gives his explicit consent to the attack on the guardian. Soon after, he dies.

In the final scenes of the film, David actually took up the job in New York. He feels less attacked in New York than in Chicago , where milkshakes and other fast foods were occasionally pelted at him. According to his speculation, this is due to the fact that he always wears a sports bow on his back when he walks through the city.

David sits in the front of his television station car at a New York street parade. In the days of his interview, he had dreamed that all of his former family would move to New York with him. In the meantime, however, he has come to terms with the separation from his wife. The film ends with a close-up of David waving and saying Hello America from the off .

criticism

Desson Thomson wrote in the Washington Post on October 28, 2005 that the film was "affecting". "Nobody" can show the shortcomings and mistakes of the characters played so "sympathetically" as Nicolas Cage. He has proven this in his previous roles such as that of an alcoholic in Leaving Las Vegas . In this film, too, he appears “charmingly idiot” and “good-natured”.

The lexicon of international film criticized the director, who cares for "arbitrariness".

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
