action

A man works alone late at night in the offices of a large financial firm in New York City . He finds a letter from company boss Roland Pembroke, which he can no longer read because he dies of a heart attack shortly afterwards .

After the cryptic content of the letter is analyzed by the top circles of the company, they come to the conclusion that Pembroke is no longer quite sane. However, since his signature is required for a major upcoming merger with another company, they commission the young and ambitious banker Lockhart to bring Pembroke back to New York from a wellness resort in the Swiss Alps .

Having arrived in the small town in Switzerland, Lockhart quickly notices on the drive to the resort that the locals are not talking about it. The facility itself appears to Lockhart as mysterious as its director, Dr. Heinreich Volmer. Since Lockhart was denied contact with Pembroke until the evening, he decided to spend the waiting time in the village. On the way back, however, there was a wildlife accident in which Lockhart lost consciousness.

He woke up three days later with a leg in a cast in a hospital room at the institution. Dr. Volmer explains to him that he can stay in the institution until his recovery. Lockhart uses this opportunity to visit Pembroke, who, however, does not want to leave the institution under any circumstances. He explains to Lockhart that he is sick and that only the institute's various water therapies can cure him.

Lockhart learns the history of the institution through another patient. According to legend, the resort was built on the ruins of a castle that belonged to a baron 200 years ago. At that time he had married his own sister in order to keep a pure bloodline . However, since she was sterile , he began looking for a cure. He carried out experiments on the local population, in which they became completely dehydrated and died. Although he found an antidote, shortly afterwards he was burned alive by the citizens together with his sister as a protest against the human experiments. Shortly before her death, the citizens of the sister are said to have cut an unborn baby out of her body and tossed it into the local aquifer . According to legend, however, the child miraculously survived. After the castle was burned down, the descendants of the baron are said to have built the sanatorium on the site.

Lockhart tries to leave the institution, but to no avail. Instead, he meets a young girl named Hannah, who claims to be a special case of the institution. Upon further research, Lockhart finds out that macabre medical therapies are being administered to patients in the institution. The water of the local aquifer has special properties and gives eels living in it a much longer lifespan. However, it is fatal to humans in the long run as it completely dehydrates their bodies. The water is administered to the patients of the institution using microscopic eels. The patients serve as a kind of filter and in the so-called transfusion wing, a life-extending essence is finally extracted from their bodies in iron lungs . Lockhart finds out that Dr. Volmer is actually the Baron and has survived for so long by consuming the life-extending essence. Hannah is his daughter, to whom he also administered the essence until it became sexually mature.

Meanwhile, Hannah is menstruating for the first time , which Dr. Moved Volmer to take her to a secret room deep inside the mountain, where he wants to rape her. Lockhart barely manages to stop him. After Lockhart and Dr. Volmer fight a bitter fight, Hannah ends it by killing Volmer. At the beginning of the action, Lockhart ignites gasoline to set Volmer on fire. The fire cannot harm him, but in the end it burns down the entire institution.

Hannah and Lockhart escape together on Hannah's bike, but on the way meet Lockhart's superiors, who have come to get him and Pembroke. After his boss orders him to get in the car, Lockhart decides to drive away with Hannah.

Production history and staff

The film was directed by Oscar winner Gore Verbinski , who turned back to the mystery horror genre for the first time 15 years after The Ring . He hired Justin Haythe as the scriptwriter . Verbinski had already worked with him before, but Haythes also wrote the script for the film drama Times of Unrest . The title A Cure for Wellness , which can be translated as “A cure for wellness”, is a play on words that promises not only healing through a wellness program but also a reduction in one's own well-being.

Cast and dubbing

The leading role of Mr. Lockhart took on Dane DeHaan . The American actor already had in the film Chronicle - What Are You Capable Of? , which marked his breakthrough in 2012 and gained supernatural horror experiences in the 2014 zombie comedy Life After Beth . Just two months after filming A Cure for Wellness , DeHaan had started work on the film Valerian - The City of a Thousand Planets , in which the actor took on another leading role.

The role of long-term patient Hannah was cast by the British-Brazilian young actress Mia Goth . Jason Isaacs plays the role of the director of the facility that Lockhart visits to find the missing board member, Mr. Pembroke, played by Harry Groener . Carl Lumbly plays Mr. Wilson in the movie, Lisa Banes plays Hollis and Eric Todd plays Josh. Ivo Nandi plays Enrico, Magnus Krepper Pieter The Vet, Jason Babinsky Carl, Craig Wroe Morris, Tom Flynn Humphrey and the Berlin-based actor Leonard Kunz Frank. The German actress Judith Hoersch can be seen in the role of sister Greta and the German actor Axel Buchholz in the role of Doctor Brennan. Johnny Otto took on the role of Doctor Barlock, and other roles include Swedish actors Tomas Norström (Franc Hill) and Ashok Mandanna (Ron Nair).

In the German dubbing, Konrad Bösherz speaks Mr. Lockhart, Samira Jakobs Hannah, Wolfgang Müller speaks Dr. Heinreich Volmer, and Joachim Kaps can be heard in German as Pembroke.

The film was financed to a large extent by funds from German film funding. The film received production funding of 400,000 euros from the Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg , while the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg granted 500,000 euros for this purpose. The Central German Media Promotion promoted the film project with 400,000 euros. To a large extent, however, the film was supported by the German Film Fund, which contributed 8.1 million euros. For this reason, the shooting of the film took place mainly in Germany and was implemented by Studio Babelsberg as the executive production company.

The shooting of the German-American co-production began on June 16, 2015 and ended after 79 days on October 5, 2015. The film was shot in the German federal states of Baden-Württemberg , Berlin , Brandenburg , Hamburg , Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia .

From June 26th to July 7th, 2015, the shooting took place in the Saxon-Anhalt town of Schraplau , where, among other things, Zellerstraße was closed. Further recordings were made in an empty prefabricated building in Zella-Mehlis, Thuringia, and at Oberhof train station. At the beginning of July 2015, filming took place in the swimming pool of the Zwickau Johannisbad.

From July 13 to 24, 2015, the shooting, organized by a team from the Babelsberg studio, took place in front of and in Hohenzollern Castle near Hechingen , which was closed to the public for this time. The shooting at the castle, which is otherwise a crowd puller in summer, took place shielded from the outside world. The castle on a mountain in the Swabian Alb , which after a remodeling in the 19th century is considered a typical example of Neo-Gothic style in its current state , and the mountains themselves, served in the film for the spa center in the Swiss Alps that Mr. Lockhart visited as a backdrop. Some recordings were made from the Zeller Horn , others were made from a helicopter . Despite some capricious weather conditions, the tight schedule of the shooting could be kept. For the shooting, a pool was created in front of the castle, which is not normally located there, as aerial photos before the start of shooting showed.

The shooting at Hohenzollern Castle and the subsequent dismantling measures were supported by local handicraft businesses and service providers, such as landscapers and arborists, a locksmith and a butcher shop, but also by a steel shop and an electrical engineering company. On the last day of shooting, host Georg Friedrich Prince of Prussia , head of the House of Hohenzollern and the former ruling Prussian royal family, was present on the film set and invited director Gore Verbinski and studio boss Henning Molfenter to sign the guest book of Hohenzollern Castle.

The shooting in the Babelsberg studio in Potsdam was attended by the Brandenburg Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke . During filming there, on August 29, 2015, a fire broke out in a large hall in which special effects were to be simulated.

In the Beelitz Heilstätten near Potsdam, interior shots were later taken. The Beelitz-Heilstätten workers' lung sanatorium originally built from 1898 onwards, a listed ensemble of 60 buildings on a total area of approx. 200 hectares, was also used during the World Wars as a military hospital and sanatorium for sick and wounded soldiers and, after the war, as the largest military hospital in the soviet army abroad. The sanctuary has become a popular film production location because of a mix of unusual architecture and decay, and some buildings have exceptionally long hallways.

From September 18 to 23, 2015, filming was planned in Hamburg , where the director wanted to capture a few moments at the Freihafen-Elbbrücke. Further filming was carried out in Switzerland, which is also the location of the story, a fictional sanatorium with a healing spring.

Post-processing and equipment

Some film recordings were later processed on the computer. In the background of some of the scenes that were filmed at Hohenzollern Castle, you cannot see Mariazell , but a computer-generated mountain range. The mountains that can be seen in the background and the train of the Rhaetian Railway in the initially shown journey over the Swiss Landwasser Viaduct , as well as the fog and snow in this scene, were added to the recordings afterwards. The series 605 train shown could not actually run on the Swiss narrow-gauge tracks.

Eve Stewart was responsible for the equipment of the film sets , the set decoration was done by Michael Standish and the German film set designer Mark Rosinski . The stage design was implemented by the workshops of Studio Babelsberg's own Art Department .

Film music

The film music was composed by Benjamin Wallfisch . The soundtrack for the film comprises 18 songs and was released on February 17, 2017 by Milan Records on CD, digital version and vinyl (only 14 tracks). The soundtrack also includes songs with a German title, including fire waltz and entry prohibited .

In the last included on the soundtrack song I Wanna Be Sedated (approximately in German I want to be sedated ) controlled by Mirel Wagner a somber folk song was sung as and from which can be heard on film a short passage in the first trailer, it is a cover version of a song by the American punk band Ramones . The song was included on the 1978 album Road to Ruin and was written by Joey Ramone during a hospital stay where he had to undergo treatment for scalds to his face and throat. The US music magazine Rolling Stone has this song at number 145 in the list of the "500 best songs of all time". The piece Bicycle composed by Wallfisch is orchestral music.

In addition, the title Ribbons was composed by the German and internationally known composer Hans Zimmer and arranged by Wallfisch.

From the Austrian band picture book , the song is Spliff to hear, and by the German techno-metal band Lightning Kill a short sequence of the song sense offenders . When Lockhart and Hannah visit the inn, you can hear the song Augen by the German band Oomph! .

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 16 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “In a surreal setting, the film combines genre elements from mystery and horror films . The plot remains a mystery for a long time. In addition to the gloomy, threatening atmosphere and various disturbing images, individual drastic scenes of violence and torture can emotionally overwhelm children and young people under the age of 16. But 16-year-olds are able to process the film because of their personal development and media experience they have already gained. "

Reviews

The film has so far won over 42 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics .

Film critics such as John Campeo remind the story of A Cure for Wellness of the film Shutter Island , while others feel reminded of Thomas Mann's educational novel The Magic Mountain , in which Hans Castorp his cousin Joachim , because of the subject matter and its location in the Swiss Alps Visited Ziemßen in the Berghof Sanatorium .

Mike Reyes of CinemaBlend.com says the film is the result of a mixture of the film noir nuances of Shutter Island , the overtones of Crimson Peak and also a good helping of BioShock .

Jake Pietras from robots-and-dragons.de explains that the film wants to draw attention to our society, which is being eaten up by consumption and greed for power, but unfortunately from around the middle it turns out to be a gothic and calmly staged thriller that doesn't really know what he actually wants to mediate now. The film lacks direction, says Pietras, even though the beginning was quite successful and with excellently filmed tracking shots conveyed the bustling activity and breathtaking speed of our working world, and the change to the stark opposite of the sanatorium in the Swiss Alps was also successful. Almost all of the main characters, especially Dane DeHaan , were also convincing actors , but none of the individual parts could save the story, according to Pietras, which unfortunately derailed completely in the last 20 minutes of the film.

Gross profit

The worldwide income of the film from theatrical screenings has so far - with production costs of around 40 million US dollars - to 26.6 million US dollars, of which 8.1 million US dollars in the USA alone. The film recorded 245,008 visitors in Germany.
