Zimmer is a suburb of the municipality of Bisingen in the Zollernalbkreis , Baden-Württemberg ( Germany ). The most famous building is the Hohenzollern Castle or, colloquially, the mountain and the castle, “the Zoller”.

geography

Zimmer is located below the north-western steep edge of the Swabian Alb , roughly halfway between Stuttgart and Lake Constance . The village is located directly at the foot of Hohenzollern Castle at an altitude of around 550 m above sea level. NHN . The place is surrounded by Hohenzollern Castle in the east and south of the Albtrauf , which extends from the Zeller Horn viewpoint to the Heiligenkopf . The village is embedded in the typical landscape on the ascent to the Swabian Alb, with its mixed forest, fruit tree meadows, a nature reserve of around 100 hectares and meadows and fields used for agriculture. The Weidenbach , which is called Zimmerbach from Zimmer, flows through the village .

Village structure

The village structure is typical for these small settlements. An old village center, which originally consisted of half-timbered houses , was laid out directly along the Weidenbach .

Of these houses, the old Wangerhaus with an original workshop has been preserved to this day. The church standing on a hill, which is dedicated to St. George and can look back on around 500 years, is characteristic of this core . Since around 1970 the village has expanded to the north and south-west of the town center through the Ganswies and Vorderwies building areas and now has around 610 inhabitants. The former peasant structure was changed by three textile companies , especially after the Second World War . There, in the textile companies Daiker, Schneider and Conzelmann, more than 100 women found jobs. There are still two traditional inns in the village. Today's Restaurant Adler is widely known for its fine cuisine and has already been mentioned in the Michelin Guide . The green tree is a farming economy with a village character. The supply structure that was intact until the 1960s (butchers, grocery stores, beverage shops) has dissolved, as in many villages in the Alb.

history

A certificate hanging in the Citizens' Hall mentions a Gottfried von Zimmer; this document from 1156 probably shows the first mention of the village by name. It can be assumed that Zimmer is younger than the surrounding villages of Alemannic origin such as Wessingen or Bisingen, the main town to which Zimmer was incorporated in 1972 as part of the municipal reform of Baden-Württemberg. Nevertheless, it can be assumed that Zimmer is much older, as both a group of burial mounds from the Hallstatt period and the field name Römersbach indicate a much earlier settlement. Gottfried von Zimmer presumably had his seat in Bürgle , a town east of Zimmer. He was a brother of the Burgraves of Zollern . Because a place called Weiler also existed at that time, the exact history of the settlement cannot be clearly deduced. According to local records, around 50 people lived in rooms around 1600. The typical names Bogenschütz, Fecker, Kaiser , Pflumm, Hausch and Schumacher, which were already mentioned before this time, are still present as family names today.

politics

Zimmer was an independent municipality until 1972 , which was always linked to the County of Zollern (later Hohenzollern). The main sources of income were timber sales and the taxes that had to be paid by Hohenzollern Castle. Before 1900, rooms were administered by bailiffs who were closely tied to the Prussian administration of the Hohenzollers' lands . Later Zimmer belonged to the district of Hechingen and during the district reform it was added to today's Zollernalb district with the old district of Hechingen . On March 1, 1972, Zimmer was incorporated into the Bisingen community as part of the community reform, where, with Thanheim and Wessingen, it now forms the independent suburbs with local councils and mayors . In the former town hall and school house, which has been expanded into a community center, the nine-member local council meets regularly, chaired by the mayor Karl-Heinz Bogenschütz.

Culture and sights

Wangerhaus

The Hohenzollern Castle is an outstanding building in the region around Zimmer . The third castle on the outlying Zeugenberg of the Swabian Alb, completed around 1855, is a much-visited tourist attraction and can be seen from afar. The castle, which was built in the neo-Gothic style, is located in the district ofzimmer and today belongs to the Bisingen community. The 500 year old church is probably the most interesting building in the village of Zimmer. The simple church, built in the Gothic style, has frescoes on the side walls, which show the apostles , in addition to a Pietà , which is well worth seeing . These were discovered and exposed during a renovation in 1935.

One of the most interesting houses is the old Wangerhaus. It was built around 1710 as a farmhouse with a stable and separate barn as well as a Wagner workshop . The half-timbered house is still preserved today in its historical condition.

Others

Zimmer offers a rich selection of hiking trails that lead around the Zoller and onto the Alb plateau. There are also plenty of meadow and forest trails for mountain bikers , which offer all levels of difficulty along the Albtrauf and up to the Swabian Alb. The network of trails for both target groups between the Zoller and Raichberg mountains is particularly dense .

Active village life is largely shaped by the local associations (music club, shooting club). The annual festivals and events are the pillars of social life. New in this context is the barn festival, which was held in and around the old village barn for the first time in 2004 and was held again in 2006, 2008 and 2010.
