The Zeller Horn ( 912.7 m above sea level ) is a mountain on the boundary between Hechingen and Albstadt - Onstmettingen am Albtrauf , the steep drop of the Swabian Alb .
location
It was named after the settlement of Zell , which was abandoned in the 15th century, in the area of today's Hechingen district of Boll , of which only the Maria Zell pilgrimage church, located below the Zeller Horn, still exists on the former castle site of Zell Castle . As a narrow branch of the Alb plateau the Raichberg upstream, the Zeller Horn offers views of the other side of a saddle before his spur on the witness Mount Hohenzollern standing Hohenzollern castle and the Albvorland. When the view is clear, the view extends as far as the Feldberg in the Black Forest and the greater Stuttgart area .
Protected areas
The 4.4 hectare Zellerhornwiese, designated as a nature reserve on February 14, 1950, lies on the western slope of the mountain . It was originally used as a wooden meadow from Onstmettingen and its flora shows traits related to the poor grassland of the wooden meadows on the Irrenberg . The contrast between the wooded slope sections of the Zeller Horn is also interesting: the southern slope has the highest oak - steppe heather forest of the Swabian Alb, on the shady northern slope you will find the typical fir - beech forest of the southwestern Alb .
The nature reserve, located at an altitude of 840 to 900 m, is a habitat for a great variety of plants, including the many-leaved lice weed , the fragrant hendelwort and the mountain cockerel, as well as the plant communities of the blue-grass lime grasslands and the montane gold oat meadows .
The Zellerhornwiese is also part of the 1,519 hectare FFH area No. 7719341 areas around Albstadt and the 43,031 hectare bird sanctuary No. 7820441 Südwestalb and Upper Danube Valley .
