The Beurener Heide is a nature reserve in the Zollernalbkreis northeast of Beuren , a district of Hechingen in the Zollernalbkreis. It is a 31.6  hectare nature reserve, the centerpiece of which is a juniper heather , below the eaves of the Swabian Alb on the southwest slope of the Dreifürstenstein . It lies at an altitude of 620 to 700 m above sea level. NN and thus on the level of the "Upper Brown Jura", which is partially covered with debris from White Jurassic limestone .

Numerous springs emerge from the upper layer of the brown Jura, the Ornatenton , in order to seep into the water-permeable limestone debris and to emerge again below.

The Beurener Heide is home to a unique diversity of species, both in terms of plants and animals. Over 360 plant species, 65 of which are endangered and protected species, can be found here. In 2013, 43 Red List species were identified in the protected area. Here you come across a limestone grassland vegetation . It includes the pyramidal dogwort ( Anacamptis pyramidalis ) as well as the flesh-colored orchid ( Dactylorhiza incarnata ), the bee ragweed ( Ophrys apifera ), the mosquito bark ( Gymnadenia conopsea ) and others between juniper bushes.

The varied landscape between spring moors and sun-drenched slopes is home to various reptile and amphibian species. So here are z. B. adder, grass snake, yellow-bellied toad, common frog and fire salamander represented. The bird fauna consists of 38 observed species, of which at least seven are endangered, including the blackcap, red backed killer, gray bunting and woodlark.

Due to inadequate visitor guidance, beaten paths formed, which are a major problem.

As early as the beginning of the 18th century, the Beurener Heide was used as a common land for growing root crops and grain. The current appearance of the heather can be traced back to sheep grazing from the 19th century.

In 1939 attempts were made to develop the heather as arable land, which failed because the land was unusable for agricultural purposes.
