The LUBW was created on January 1, 2006 from the merger of the State Institute for Environmental Protection (LfU) with the Center for Environmental Measurements , Environmental Surveys and Device Safety (UMEG). On December 1, 2017, the long name of the State Institute for the Environment, Measurements and Nature Conservation Baden-Württemberg , which has been in effect since then , was changed to the State Institute for the Environment Baden-Württemberg , while retaining the previous abbreviation.

tasks

The LUBW provides advice and technical support to the state government of Baden-Württemberg and other state authorities. In terms of content, topics from nature, environmental and radiation protection are covered as well as technical occupational safety and plant and product safety. To this end, LUBW collects data on the environment nationwide and analyzes air, water and soil samples. These are made available to the public in a processed form. Most of this data has been made available to citizens via the " My Environment " app since 2014 .

At the beginning of the activities of the LUBW and LfU, the main focus was on air pollution control (e.g. possible measures and strategies against winter smog such as desulphurisation and denitrification of coal-fired power plants ) and exhaust gas cleaning from motor vehicles , later on, for example, the fight against ground-level Ozone (" summer smog "). From 1990, particulate matter came into the spectrum of observation and activities as a disease- causing environmental pollution with the measurement of air pollution ; today, for example, the proportion of microplastics and plastic residues must also be examined in the freshwater deposits of Baden-Württemberg.
