location
The nature reserve is located in the Hohe Schwabenalb natural area and lies in the Schmiecha valley between the Albstadt districts of Onstmettingen and Tailfingen . In the west and east it borders on the protected landscape area No. 4.17.001 Albstadt-Bitz .
Protection purpose
According to the ordinance, the protection purpose is the preservation, maintenance and improvement of a wetland complex, which is rare for the Swabian Alb, which is characterized by dry locations, as a habitat for numerous endangered and protected animal and plant species, as well as as a structuring landscape element in a densely populated urban landscape. Of particular ecological importance here are:
- the largely natural course of the Schmiecha and its side ditches;
- the unused large sedge companies adapted to the respective water level;
- the extensively used wet meadows on the edge;
- the fens with the butterfly species attached to them;
- the entire area as a breeding, feeding and resting habitat for endangered and threatened bird species.
Flora and fauna
The biodiversity of the area is reflected in the 168 plant and 108 animal species that have been recorded so far. The predominant plant species is the stiff sedge . The area is a breeding ground for the little ringed plover and the great gray shrike . Also noteworthy is the occurrence of the fringed mother-of-pearl moth .
