The Plettenkeller is a nature reserve designated by the Tübingen regional council on December 5, 1984 by ordinance in the area of the municipalities of Ratshausen , Dotternhausen and the town of Schömberg in the Zollernalb district .

location

The Plettenkeller nature reserve is located about one kilometer northeast of Ratshausen . It belongs to the natural area Hohe Schwabenalb . The reserve includes the steep southern slope of the Plettenberg .

The nature reserve is part of the FFH area Östlicher Großer Heuberg and the bird sanctuary Südwestalb and Upper Danube Valley .

Protection purpose

According to the Protected Area Ordinance, the main protection purpose is “to preserve the southern Plettenberg with its absolutely natural vegetation on the steep slope, the near-natural heather on its plateau and the near-natural forest in the“ Plettenkeller ”. The natural regeneration of vegetation is an important prerequisite for preserving the last natural ecological cells. Here the connections between geological subsoil, geomorphological processes, climate, soil formation, vegetation, national culture and landscape become clear in a rare way in a small space. The extreme relief, climate and soil conditions lead to an extremely delicate structure of habitats for numerous endangered, protected and rare plant and animal species. "

Landscape character

The area is a steep slope of the Plettenberg towering over 100 meters. It is dominated by natural rock formations, rubble heaps and spruce block forest. In 1851 the «Bergschlipf von Ratshausen» occurred here, a landslide that gave rise to the mountain face in its present form. In the center of the nature reserve is the former Ratshausen gravel pit, in which Schroppen was mined. On the adjacent plateau of the Plettenberg there are grasslands and juniper heaths , some of which are part of the nature reserve.
