The Plettenberg ( 1001.7 m above sea level ) is a striking mountain on the west side of the Swabian Alb . It is one of the mountains that protrudes farthest from the low mountain range; the 158 meter high telecommunications tower built on top of it can be seen from a great distance. Along with the Lochen ( 964 m above sea level ) and the Schafberg ( 999 m above sea level ), the Plettenberg belongs to the so-called Balinger Mountains, of which it is the highest. As the seventh highest mountain in the Swabian Alb , the Plettenberg does not belong to the region of 10 thousand , although this region is organically connected.
Geographical location
The Plettenberg lies above the Upper Schischem valley and is surrounded by the towns and communities of Schömberg , Dotternhausen , Roßwangen (district of Balingen ), Hausen am Tann and Ratshausen .
nature
On the plateau of the Plettenberg there are still some juniper heaths and juniper bushes on which you can also find silver thistles typical of the Plettenberg , and occasionally the rarer gold thistles . These areas are under nature protection. There are also rare butterflies as Argynnis aglaja to dark green fritillary , Callophrys rubi Green Hairstreak , Erebia medusa erebia medusa and Zygaena viciae ZYGAENA VICIAE , Argynnis adippe Fiery fritillary , Boloria dia neglected grassland Fritillary , Boloria euphrosyne silver spot fritillary , Coenonympha arcania coenonympha arcania , Colias alfacariensis ZYGAENA TRANSALPINA Cupid minimus small blue , Erebia aethiops Scotch Argus , Erebia ligea erebia ligea , Erynnis up dingy skipper , Hamearis lucina Hamearis Lucina , Lasiommata maera brown eye , Lasiommata megera wall Fuchs , Limenitis Camilla Small Kingfisher , Nymphalis antiopa Trauermantel , Polyommatus bellargus Himmelblauer Bläuling , Polyommatus coridon Silbergrüner Bläuling , Polyommatus semiargus Rotklee-Bläuling , Satyrium w-album Elmen-Zipfelfalter , Zygaena fausta Bergkronwicken-Ram and Zygaena tr ansalpina horseshoe clover ram .
Below the plateau, the mountain is covered by mixed forest, which largely consists of beech , spruce and silver fir . In spring, wild garlic grows on the slope of the mountain .
In the so-called Plettenkeller on the southern slope of the mountain, large fallen limestone cliffs and rare bear moss plants can be found in an untouched forest and moss landscape .
Limestone mining
Limestone has been extracted on the Plettenberg for cement production since 1908. From 1909, the rock extracted from the mountain was transported to the Balingen cement factory there by cable car. The work had to be given up in 1926 due to financial difficulties, which is why the work in the limestone quarry was temporarily terminated. The cable car to Balingen was dismantled; a mast foundation on the north slope towards Roßwangen is evidence of it .
In 1939 the Portland cement plant Rudolf Rohrbach KG was built in Dotternhausen , which took over the quarry and resumed limestone mining. Today's Holcim (Süddeutschland) GmbH , until 2002 Rohrbach-Zement GmbH & Co. KG , still operates this quarry for cement production. Every day 3000 tons of limestone from the upcoming White Jura are blasted out of the mountain, crushed and transported away with the 2.3 kilometer long Dotternhausen – Plettenberg cable car .
A citizens' initiative is observing the interventions and would like to preserve the recreational value of the Plettenberg.
Material ropeway Dotternhausen – Plettenberg
The material ropeway for transporting the limestone was built in 1942 and modernized in 1971. It runs from the west side of the Plettenberg to the cement works in Dotternhausen and crosses the federal highway 27 among other things . It is a circular ropeway with 65 wagons, each with a capacity of 1.7 tons.
A renewal of the cable car is planned for autumn 2020 and should be implemented in eight weeks. The transport performance, but not the amount of dismantling, is to be increased, which means that the previously not uncommon weekend operation of the cable car is to be stopped. A possibility should also be created to transport people with it. The planning approval decision was issued by the Tübingen regional council in December 2019.
Telecommunications tower
The German Radio Tower GmbH , a subsidiary of the German Telekom AG operates on the northern tip of Plettenberg plateau a 158 meter high telecommunications tower ( tower type of reinforced concrete , FMT 13), which was built 1980th
tourism
The Plettenberg is a main destination of the Upper Schischemtal tourist area . Numerous hiking trails open up the mountain, the plateau is easy to reach from all sides. Some paths are very demanding here, such as the steep climbs from Ratshausen, Schömberg ( Känzele ) and Dotternhausen ( Eselsteigle / Russawägle ). About halfway along the driveway from Dotternhausen, there is a small fountain ( Brünnele) , which was built by the Swabian Alb Association , Dotternhausen local group, and where you can cool off in warm temperatures.
Two main hiking trails of the Swabian Alb Association run over the Plettenberg: the main hiking trail 1 ( Swabian Alb northern edge path ) and the main hiking trail 3 ( Main-Neckar-Rhine path ). Guided hikes are offered by NABU and the Swabian Alb Association .
Since the Plettenberg is a mountain that protrudes very far from the line of the Albtrauf , you have a good view of the Black Forest , the Vosges , the Alb foreland beyond Stuttgart , the other Alb mountains as well as Upper Swabia , the Lake Constance region and the Alps in good weather .
The Plettenberg has been mentioned in many hiking guides since the early 19th century. B. in Gustav Schwab's hiking guide signpost and travel description under the title The Neckar side of the Swabian Alb , in which a hike from Balingen to the Plettenberg (height 3520 Würt. Feet ) is described. Likewise, the Plettenberg was mentioned by Julius Wais , who was the author of many hiking guides at the beginning of the 20th century, as one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Württemberg .
Plettenberghütte
On the mountain on the access road from Dotternhausen is 970 m above sea level. NHN has built the Plettenberghütte ( sheep house ) since the inauguration on May 21, 1967 . After the expansion of the limestone mining area, the old sheep house had to give way in 1957. At the request of the Swabian Alb Association, Dotternhausen local group, a new hut was built outside of potential expansion areas. The hut was managed by the Swabian Alb Association until 2011, since then it has been privately leased and is open all year round on Sundays and public holidays. There is a barbecue area and a small playground around the Plettenberghütte.
The hut is not connected to the water network. The toilets are flushed from a rainwater cistern , and drinking water is brought to the hut in cans.
Although the hut is outside the expansion areas for the quarrying of veal, it is in close proximity. Due to the no longer up-to-date gastronomic standards, a new building at another location on the Plettenberg would be an option.
useful information
The Plettenberg is also called Bloachta by the residents of the surrounding communities . This is the current dialect form of the old name of the mountain, Plaikten, which is probably of Celtic origin, as indicated by the feminine gender of the name , as with the neighboring Lochen .
At the southern end of the Plettenberg are the remains of the 12th century moat from Plettenberg Castle .
In gratitude that Dotternhausen survived the Second World War almost unscathed, the residents erected an oak mountain cross on the north side of the Plettenberg in 1947 (restored in 1997). From 1968 to 1986 a mountain mass was celebrated here every year on Pentecost Sunday .
Around June 21st, the Swabian Albverein Dotternhausen organizes a solstice celebration on the Plettenberg with a large fire that can be seen from far away in the valley when the visibility is good.
Say
The notorious robber Hannikel is said to have secretly visited the Blochta to pick medicinal herbs for wound care. Since then, the St. John's wort growing on Plettenberg has been called Hannikelkraut.
