The silver- flecked mother-of-pearl butterfly or violet mother-of-pearl butterfly ( Boloria euphrosyne ) is a butterfly (day butterfly ) of the genus Boloria in the family of the noble butterfly (Nymphalidae). The specific epithet is derived from Euphrosyne , one of the three graces from Greek mythology .

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 32 to 40 millimeters. As with other mother-of-pearl butterflies, their lightly lined upper sides of the wings show a dark pattern on an orange background. At the edge of the wing, submarginal spots are set off in triangular form, which are followed postdiscally by a series of dark points. In the disk region there are undulating patterns, and a round dark spot on each of the hind wings near the basal dark pattern.

The undersides of the hind wings are tinted brick-red and cream-colored and have a black, light-edged point near the base of the wings. Approximately in the middle of the hind wings there is a cream-colored band, in the middle of which a silver mother-of-pearl spot can be seen. The edge of the wing bears a chain of white spots, similar to a necklace made of pearls (in English the butterfly is called "pearl-bordered fritillary", French "Grand collier argenté").

The caterpillars are about 25 millimeters long and are colored black. They have numerous black, ramified thorns, which are yellow at the base on the left and right of the back. But there are also completely black copies.

Similar species

  • Brown-spotted mother-of-pearl butterfly ( Boloria selene ) - this relative, also known as the swamp-meadow mother-of-pearl butterfly, is somewhat smaller and shows submarginal spots on the upper side of the wing, which are angularly offset. Dark angles are also pronounced on the underside of the hind wing so that the light spots do not appear pearl-like. There are also three mother-of-pearl spots in a sand-colored band, as well as chestnut-colored cells next to them.

Occurrence

The animals occur in Europe , except in parts of the south, in Turkey , in Russia and in the north of Kazakhstan . They live on forest edges and clearings and poor meadows. They are common locally, but are in decline in many places.

Flight times

They fly in one generation from late April to July, in the south and in warm areas also in two from April to June and from July to September.

food

Food of the caterpillars

The caterpillars feed on rough violets ( Viola hirta ) and other types of violets .

Food of the adults

The moths suckle mainly on creeping gunsel ( Ajuga reptans ). The species has also been observed more rarely on creeping buttercups ( Ranunculus repens ), Bach speedwell ( Veronica beccabunga ) and various ring thistle species ( Carduus ).

development

The females lay their eggs on the forage plants or other small, herbaceous plants. The caterpillars overwinter in a dry, rolled-up leaf and pupate in April, and much later in the mountains.
