Heiko Bellmann 2010

Heiko Bellmann (March 17, 1950 - March 7, 2014 ) was a German zoologist . The author from Lonsee has published entomological and arachnological works. He has also achieved fame abroad through his identification books on insects and spiders , which he furnished with his own macro photographs .

Life

After graduating from high school, Heiko Bellmann studied biology at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . He then went to Ulm University in 1975 and was a research assistant there from then on. In 1979 he received his doctorate at the Ulm Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics with the study of the ethology of central European abdominal collector bees ( Hymenoptera , Megachilidae ), Osmia bicolor , Osmia aurulenta , Osmia rufohirta , Anthidium punctatum , Anthidiellum strigatum , Trachusa byssina . Since the mid-1980s, he became known to the public through his identification books with color photos . In addition to these field guides published by Gunter Steinbach , Bellmann and other co-authors also wrote volumes 4 to 6 of the Naturenzyklopädie Europäische (1992) of the Munich Mosaik Verlag with and together with Reinhard Witt for the same publisher also the two-volume Naturenzyklopädie der Insekten (1994).

In Franckh Cosmos Publishing House Heiko Bellmann published the comprehensive representations bees, wasps, ants. Hymenoptera of Central Europe (1995), Cosmos Atlas Arachnids of Europe (1997), The new Cosmos butterfly guide. Butterflies, caterpillars and forage plants (2003) and Der Kosmos-Heuschreckenführer. Determine the species of Central Europe with certainty (2006). Some of these books have been translated into French, Spanish, Dutch or Polish. Since 1996, together with Klaus Honomichl , Bellmann has continued the standard work Biology and Ecology of Insects , founded by Werner Jacobs - both in the well-known pocket dictionary and expanded as a CD-ROM dictionary.

Since Bellmann has been intensively involved in photographic documentation, especially of native insects and arachnids, since 1971, he was able to provide all of his publications with his own photos, which are the essential success factor of his books due to their high quality. Numerous pictures were taken in Central Europe and the Mediterranean. According to Bellmann's own information, his picture archive in 2006 comprised around 50,000 slides of around 2,400 animal and 1,800 plant species, taking into account the most important animal and plant groups in Central and Southern Europe with the exception of birds , fish , unicellular organisms and marine organisms. From this rich fund he also equipped his slide presentations on various topics.

Heiko Bellmann died on March 7, 2014 after suffering a faint attack the day before during a lecture in Geislingen near Ulm and was taken to the local hospital.
