Waters

Schischemtalsperre in Schömberg

To the east of the district that flows from the southeast to the north Schlichem which in the further course at Epfendorf in the Neckar flows. The Schlichen is fed by numerous smaller streams such as the Räßentälebach and the Scheubühlgrabenbach. Other noteworthy streams are the Schmellbach and the Schwarzenbach . There are also numerous smaller biotopes such as the Östreweiher between Schömberg and Neuhaus.

Schischemtalsperre

The Schischem is dammed southeast of the old town (Schischemtalsperre). The Schlichertalsperre, known colloquially simply as "Stausee" - more rarely "Schömberger Stausee" - has an area of 10.4 hectares and begins as a very narrow Vorsee near the Untere Säge and extends almost to the old town center, where the reservoir is 170 m wide having. The reservoir has excellent water quality every year.

geology

Most of the settlement areas are on the Black Jura . In some areas, after a few centimeters of humus , the so-called oil shale can be found . On steep slopes, for example around the reservoir, the oil shale is partially exposed and can be seen without excavations. Especially older buildings in the old town area occasionally show cracks in the building structure due to the fragile oil shale.

In the higher areas of the district, for example on the slopes of the Plettenberg, the rock layers change into limestone .

climate

The climate in Schömberg is warm and temperate. Due to the congestion around the surrounding high mountains, rain and snow areas sometimes cause heavy rainfall. The average rainfall is 826.8 mm per year. The spring and summer months from May to August are particularly significant with up to over 80 mm per month. Heat thunderstorms in these months sometimes occur several times a week, depending on the weather conditions.

Snowfalls usually occur between October and April, more rarely in September or even in May. In winter, there can be snow for longer periods of time, but the amounts of snow can usually not be compared with those in the communities on the Großer Heuberg . Ground frost can occur all year round and is not uncommon on clear nights in early (until around the end of June) and late summer (from around the end of August).

City structure

The city of Schömberg consists of the two districts Schömberg and Schörzingen . In the district of Schörzingen, a village within the meaning of the Baden-Württemberg municipal code has been set up with its own local council and mayor as its chairman.

The Schömberg district includes the town of Schömberg, the hamlet of Untere Säge, the homestead Obere Säge and the pilgrimage church and the Palmbühl house. The village Schörzingen and the houses Lehen and Neuhaus belong to the district of Schörzingen.

The town of Altheim, mentioned in 768, is probably a predecessor of Schömberg and has merged into Schömberg. In the Schömberg district are the deserted areas of Holzheim, Nordheim and Unterschömberg. Holzheim was first mentioned in 785 as Hoolzaim and disappeared after 1328. Nordheim probably passed away in the 13th century. Both places belonged to a larger group of home places . Unterschömberg was a group of houses in the Schischem valley, to which mills, a hammer mill and wash houses belonged. The place was mentioned in 1739 and disappeared around 1750. In the district of Schörzingen was the castle and town of Hohenberg and the Starzila mentioned in 1090, which is believed to be near Hohenberg.

The so-called "Swiss Road", which later was a continuous road from Bad Cannstatt to Schaffhausen , reached Schömberg in 1784. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe also mentioned Schömberg in his diary in 1797 and reported that the journey from Tübingen to Tuttlingen took 16.5 hours. Part of this street now bears the street name Schweizer Straße and runs from the junction of the B 27 past the market square to the level crossing near the train station, from where it is called Wellendinger Straße.

Expansion of the urban area

The distance between the northernmost point between Dormettingen and Dautmergen and the southernmost point at Oberhohenberg is approx. 8.3 km. The distance between the westernmost point at the Herleswasen landfill and the easternmost point on the Plettenberg is approx. 7 km. The total area is 23.27 km 2 .

The northernmost point of the district is between Dormettingen and Dautmergen, not far from the Dormettingen slate adventure park. From there the city limits run westwards and cross Dautmerger Strasse (L 435) near Marienhof. First in a south-westerly, then in a southerly direction, the Schömberger district borders on Zimmer under the castle and crosses the Killwiesenbach and Zimmerner Strasse (K 7133) in Schönhager Loch.

In the Schwarzenbach nature reserve, Schömberg now borders the town and district of Rottweil . The border leads eastwards through the Bitzwäldle near Neukirch and Zepfenhan and then along Wellendinger Straße (L 434) past Neuhaus and the Zepfenhan airfield towards the southwest. Behind the Herleswasen landfill, the district boundary follows the Herleswasengraben, crosses the L 434 and continues along the Hangelbrunnengraben, a few meters along the Starzel and then along the Erschengraben in an easterly direction.

Past the Schörzingen concentration camp cemetery, the border crosses Wilflinger Straße (K 7134) and leads southeast into the forest towards Oberhohenberg . The southernmost point is southwest of the summit, from where the border now runs together with Deilingen and the Tuttlingen district.

From now on, the border runs in a northerly direction along the forests that can be seen from Deilingen and are thus well above Schörzingen. After crossing the Albaufstieg (L 435) between Schömberg and Deilingen, not far from the turn of the "Alte Straße" after Weilen unter den Rinnen , the shared border with Weilen now runs parallel to the L 435 and crosses it again near the parking lot at Wochenberg .

The Plettenberg (1002 m) seen from the Ortenberg (996 m), Schömberg can be seen on the left edge of the picture

Then it follows the Weilener Straße (K 7134) for a short time and shortly before Weilen leads along the Witthaus and the Brandbächles in a northeasterly direction to the confluence of the Brandbächles in the Weilenbach. From there, the border runs south along the Weilenbach up to the vicinity of the barbecue area at Honau. From there it goes again in a north-easterly direction to almost the Schischembrücke of the K 7170 just before Ratshausen and on to the southwest edge of the Plettenberg in the Plettenkeller nature reserve, where the easternmost point of the district is also located. From there Schömberg borders on Dotternhausen.

Past the refuge on the Plettenberg, the district not far from the Steinbach leads in a north-westerly direction to the crossing of the Balingen – Rottweil railway line and the communal road to Dotternhausen. To the south along the B 27 , the border crosses this in the “fox hole” and runs along the Schlicher in a north direction to the northernmost point.

history

middle Ages

Schömberg was first mentioned in 1255: Count Friedrich VI. von Zollern gave his friend Konrad von Tierberg the church in Balingen "on the field near Schömberg" ( Campo oput Shonberc ) . Twelve years later, in 1267, Schömberg came to the Counts of Hohenberg due to a conflict between Zollern and Hohenberg . Since 1381 the Hohenberg lordship and thus also Schömberg was a part of Upper Austria . Due to the oldest known tax collection, the population of Schömberg in 1394 can be estimated at around 500. From 1410 to 1454 Schömberg was pledged to the imperial cities and controlled by the imperial town of Rottweil on their behalf. In 1482/83 there was evidence of a booth fire.

Early modern times and witch hunt

In 1554 Margaretha Weißbrot von Schemberg and in 1607 Anna Klarer von Schömberg were executed by burning in Rottweil. On April 15, 2015, the city council of Rottweil passed a resolution on the socio-ethical and moral rehabilitation of the victims of the witch trials.

Schömberg was often partially destroyed during the wars in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the Thirty Years War, the Swedes attacked in 1633 and the Imperialists in 1635. 42 houses fell victim to the attacks. A short time later, in 1644, another 60 houses were destroyed. On December 9th, 1750, the great city fire destroyed the entire city. The city was completely rebuilt by 1753 through an unprecedented relief effort by the citizens.

Württemberg time

In 1805 the County of Hohenberg and thus also Schömberg fell from the Austrian Empire to the Electorate of Württemberg , which was elevated to a kingdom in 1806 . In 1805 Schömberg came to the Oberamt Spaichingen and in 1810 to the Oberamt Rottweil according to the administrative structure valid until 1934/38 . 26 Schömberg citizens died as soldiers during the Napoleonic Wars .

At the end of the 19th century (1896/97) the first house water pipeline was built in Schömberg. Fourteen years later (1910) 80 Schömberg households were connected to the power grid.

In 1911 opened Württemberg State Railways the route Balingen-Schomberg . Seventeen years later, in 1928, the Rottweil – Schömberg railway was completed.

During the First World War from 1914 to 1918, 257 Schömberg soldiers had to go to the front and 39 soldiers died.

Republic and Nazi era

From 1918/19 to 1933 Schömberg was part of the free state of Württemberg . During the district reform in Württemberg during the Nazi era , Schömberg came to the Balingen district in 1938 . In the same year the construction of the Schischemtalsperre for the cooling water supply of the cement works in Dotternhausen started. This was completed in 1944. Also in 1944, the subcamps of the Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp were set up on the train of the " Desert Company " to extract oil from oil shale . A subcamp was also established near Schömberg with the Schömberg concentration camp. Another satellite camp was located in the Schörzingen district, the Schörzingen concentration camp . The inmates had to do very heavy physical labor to extract oil from the existing oil shale. The production was completely unprofitable, but was demanded by the top of the regime because the Germans no longer had enough oil wells.

post war period

After the Second World War, the city of Schömberg fell into the French zone of occupation and thus came to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern in 1947 , which in 1952 became the administrative district of South Württemberg-Hohenzollern in the state of Baden-Württemberg.

Due to the district reform , Schömberg was assigned to the new Zollernalb district on January 1, 1973 .

Today's town was re-formed on February 1, 1973 in the course of community and district reform by the merger of the town of Schömberg with the community of Schörzingen.

In 2004, evidence was found that Schömberg was mentioned earlier than 1267. Thus, in 2005, the 750th anniversary took place only 38 years after the 700th anniversary.

population

Population development of Schömberg (Zollernalbkreis)

Population development

The town of Schömberg had 4673 inhabitants on December 31, 2018. 3353 of them live in Schömberg, 1320 in the Schörzingen district.

The population has increased steadily over the past centuries and has remained relatively constant in recent years.

language

Swabian is widely spoken in Schömberg . However, the Swabian dialect differs significantly from the well-known Swabian dialects in the Alemannic-speaking area and Central Swabian in the Stuttgart area. The Schömberg dialect cannot be fully assigned to the typical Southwest Swabian either, as there are many specific words and word variations that municipalities no longer exist in this form even a few kilometers away.

Although Schörzingen has been incorporated into Schömberg for almost fifty years, the dialects are completely different, as Schörzingen has an Alemannic influence.

Religions and church buildings

Schömberg was predominantly Catholic until the early 19th century due to its affiliation with Upper Austria .

Church building

St. Peter and Paul

The Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul was built in 1838 in a neoclassical style. The tower of the church, which characterizes the cityscape, in which five bells have their place, has a height of 57 meters. The number of seats in the church is around 350. Special features and works of art in the church include the Holy Walk and the figures of Peter and Paul.

Palmbuhl

On a hill on the right side of the Schlichem the Sanctuary is the Sorrowful Mother of God of the Palmbühl. The pilgrimage season on the Palmbühl begins on May 1st and ends with the Hubertus Mass on the last weekend in October.

The earliest mention of the Palmbühl dates back to 1331. Many important documents were lost due to fire disasters during the Thirty Years War and the fire in 1750. There are two legends about the origin of the pilgrimage site:

  • The first says that a shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows stood on the site of today's church. When they wanted to build a chapel for it and chose a higher place for it, namely the Palmbühlkapf, the building material was found again and again in the morning near the wayside shrine. That is why the chapel was built there later.
  • The second legend says that passing merchants heard a strange, beautiful song from the street and they entered the Leonhard Chapel, which was then there. There they would only have seen the image of Mary.

The interior of the church contains many paintings, figures and carvings, some from the 14th century. In the outside area of the Palmbühl there is a way of the cross with 14 stations that leads into the Schischem valley. The Judas Thaddäus Chapel and the Brother House are also in the immediate vicinity. In 2006, with Father Kunibert, the Franciscan Order left the Palmbühl. The new pastor on the Palmbühl is Josef Schäfer, originally from Ratshausen . Services are only held on the Palmbühl from May up to and including October.

In addition, the altar of the church was built by a Schömberger son named Urban Faulhaber. The access road to the Palmbühlkirche was named after him. In the same case, the square in front of the rectory was named after the prelate Caspar Oechsle.

mosque

Since 1976 there have been rooms for the residents of Schömberg with Islamic faith in order to be able to pursue their faith. At that time, a room was rented in Weiherstrasse. Since the room was too small, the holiday prayers were initially held in the Schömberger Festhalle. From 1979 the 200 year old rooms of the former inn "Rössle" were rented and converted. In 1983 the Turkish community was entered in the register of associations as D. I. T. I. B. Schömberg Müslümanlar Cemiyeti . So the community got an imam who could teach the children and young people. Due to the steadily increasing number of members and the danger of the building collapsing, the building was demolished on April 6, 2001 and a new mosque was built in the same place. This was officially inaugurated on May 31, 2003.

politics

town hall

The town hall is located in the upper part of the Alte Hauptstrasse not far from the market square. Particularly striking is the town hall clock, which is attached to the facade and protrudes slightly over the street, as well as the bell tower, which still rings today at the usual times. The bells from the town hall can always be heard in front of the town church of St. Peter and Paul, a few meters away, and therefore never simultaneously in automatic mode.

The building above the town hall, in which the Gasthaus Ratsstube and later a family doctor's practice were housed, has served as a citizens' office and tourist information office since the beginning of the 21st century.

Below the town hall, the Rathausgasse runs across the Alte Hauptstrasse and is followed by a building built in 1837. This was bought by the city in 2008, the monument protection was lifted due to dilapidation and completely demolished in 2019. An extension of the town hall is to be built at this point.

Municipal council

The last local election took place on May 25, 2019. As of March 28, 2019, there were only 13 applicants for 14 seats in the municipal council. Two other candidates then made themselves available as additional applicants, but had to be handwritten on the voting slip by the voters. The list of the CDU and the "Free List" no longer appeared, which is why there was only a single list of "Free Citizens". This resulted in a majority vote .

All 13 applicants on the list, as well as one of the two candidates who had agreed to participate in the local council in the event of an election, were elected. 294 additional names were written by voters on the ballot and received votes, of which 34 were more than five votes.

Eleven councilors from Schömberg and three from the Schörzingen district sit on the local council. The fake sub-district election , which was used until the 2014 local election , was abolished by the local council in 2018.

mayor

The mayor is elected for an eight-year term. The current second term of office of Karl-Josef Sprenger ends in 2021. In April 2013, Sprenger was confirmed in office with 68.6% of the votes.

  • 1973–2005: Berthold Waizenegger
  • since 2005: Karl-Josef Sprenger

Local government association

Schömberg is the seat of the Upper Schischemtal community administration association , which includes the town of Schömberg and the communities of Dautmergen, Dormettingen, Dotternhausen, Hausen am Tann, Ratshausen, Weilen unter den Rinnen and rooms under the castle.

Constituencies

Schomberg is part of the parliamentary constituency Zollernalb-Sigmaringen (295) supported by Thomas Bareiß (CDU) since the 2005 election in the Bundestag is represented.

The parliamentary constituency Balingen is since the state election in 2016 by Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut (CDU), who has since been Minister for Economics, Labor and Housing for Baden-Württemberg. The constituency was previously represented by Günther-Martin Pauli (CDU) for 15 years .

For the election of the district council, Schömberg lies in constituency VI together with all other communities from the Upper Schischemtal as well as Rosenfeld and Geislingen . Since the local elections in 2019, no representative from Schömberg has sat in the district council in Balingen.

coat of arms

The blazon of the coat of arms reads: "In a shield divided by silver and red above a black stag's pole." The coat of arms unites the two affiliations of Schömberg from the last centuries:

  • The stag bar can be found in many coats of arms of Wuerttemberg communities and attests to the affiliation to the Kingdom of Wuerttemberg in the 19th century and until 1918 .
  • The colors red and white symbolize the centuries-long affiliation to Upper Austria .

Town twinning

The Upper Schischemtal municipal administration association has been in partnership with the Val d'Oison region ( Normandy ) since April 9, 1994 . FranceFrance

Da Bolanes (
Fools Dance )

Schömberg is a stronghold of the Swabian-Alemannic carnival . The main characters in the picture are fringed fools and foxes, especially in the “Bolanes”, a traditional dance of fools. The fools incessantly "itch" (jump) to the fool's march on the market square and sound their bells.

Interesting individual figures are the old Harzer from 1812, the Harzer , the order figures of the hussars, the half-black , the or the Blätzle and the wart '.

Other special features and rich in tradition are the fool's jump on Shrovetide Monday morning and the subsequent fool's song, to which a round dance is danced. Each move ends with a waltz.

The carnival is organized and carried out by the Schömberg Association of Fools . This is a member of the Association of Swabian-Alemannic Fool Guilds (VSAN).

City festival

A town festival takes place in Schömberg every three years. This takes place mainly in the old town center and in the area of the market square and Zehntscheuvorplatz. In 2007 there was no city festival, but a lake festival at the Schömberger reservoir . Despite positive voices, the upcoming city festivals took place again in the Städtle due to the great logistical effort. The last city festival took place in 2019.

In the Schörzingen district , the village festival also takes place every three years, but not in the same year, but one year before Schömberg.

Schömberg is the end point of a railway line from Balingen (until 1971 there was a continuation to Rottweil). The route is still used by freight trains today. In summer, the Hohenzollerische Landesbahn (HzL) offers passenger services on Sundays and public holidays. The nearest larger train stations are in Rottweil ( Gäubahn ) and Balingen ( Zollernalbbahn ).

The former station building was used as a residential building for a long time; today it is empty. Since 2019 it has been located in the “redevelopment area town hall / station area”.

Tourist trains on Sundays and public holidays in summer

Since 2002 Hohenzollerische Landesbahn tourist trains have been running from Tübingen to Kleinengstingen (cars 4–5), Schömberg (car 3) and Sigmaringen (car 1–2) and reach the Upper Danube nature reserve . The journeys are operated with the Regio-Shuttle RS 1 diesel multiple units. Since 2015, an early train with departure at 8:33 a.m. in Balingen has enabled full-day excursions. The last train leaves Schömberg at 5:04 p.m. The season runs from May 1st to the last weekend with summer time .

In Schömberg there is still the stop at the original train station, which has received a new embankment and is located a few meters in front of the former station building. In addition, the “Schömberg Stausee” stop, which is located above the Schischemtalsperre, was rebuilt.

Neckar-Alb regional light rail

As part of the Neckar-Alb regional light rail project , the Balingen – Rottweil line is defined as the S11 supplementary line. A reactivation of the line to Rottweil and a connection to the regional light rail is not planned for the time being (as of April 2019).

As part of a review of the possible reactivation of 41 railway lines in Baden-Württemberg by the end of 2020, the line between Balingen and Schömberg will be analyzed again. The dismantled route between Schömberg and Rottweil aroused no interest in the state of Baden-Württemberg, despite the fact that an alternative route was kept free, which is why the district council of the Zollernalb district wants to make a second attempt for an express bus between Balingen and Rottweil.

Bus transport

The Public transport is by the Verkehrsverbund Neckar-Alb-Donau guaranteed (NALDO). The city is in honeycomb 334.

B 27 bypass

Schömberg has been campaigning for a bypass of the B 27 for several decades . With the publication of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 , this was classified in the " urgent need " category. The analysis determined a traffic load of over 16,000 vehicles per day with a heavy goods vehicle share of 11%. A bypass is planned north of the settlement areas and immediately south of the "industrial area north".

The junction from the north is to take place in the "Fuchsloch" before crossing the Schischem and lead over a bridge over the Schischem and its floodplain in the direction of "Industriegebiet Nord". In the further course it should lead back over the "Bergreute" back to the existing route west of the junction of the L 435 in the direction of Deilingen ("Albaufstieg") and east of the "Bitzwäldles". In this context, the L 435 in the direction of Dautmergen and the K 7168 in the direction of Zimmer ud B. are to be re-routed and connected to the new road accordingly.

With the relocation of new companies and the associated enlargement of the "industrial area north", the construction of the bypass is to be pushed ahead.

Bike paths

Most of the neighboring towns can be reached via bike and hiking trails , some of which run parallel to the roads, some through forests and along fields.

In Schömberg, a new fire station is currently being built on Wellendinger Straße (K 7169) a good kilometer away from the current location and should be completed in 2020. A dental, orthodontic and physiotherapy practice will also be housed in the new fire station.

The departments support each other and are also used as support in the entire Upper Schischemtal, depending on requirements also district-wide and cross-district, the latter mainly to support the neighboring district of Rottweil.
