About this picture

Winterlingen is a municipality in the Zollernalb district , about ten kilometers southeast of Albstadt . It has existed in its current form since January 1, 1975, when the previously independent communities Benzingen with the hamlet Blättringen (211 hectares district area) and Harthausen auf der Scher were incorporated into Winterlingen.

geography

Geographical location

The municipality is located on the plateau belonging to the western Swabian Alb . There are neither prominent mountains nor big differences in altitude or, because of the karstification of the Alb, flowing water. The marked areas of the three districts, located between 730 and 820 m high, are: Winterlingen 16.88 km², Benzingen 17.09 km², Harthausen 16.67 km².

Neighboring communities

The following cities and municipalities border the municipality of Winterlingen:

Community structure

The community consists of the former communities Benzingen , Harthausen auf der Scher and Winterlingen. The village of Benzingen and the hamlet of Blättringen belong to the former municipality of Benzingen . The village of Harthausen belongs to the former municipality of Harthausen. The village Winterlingen and the houses Sonnenhalden and Weiden belonged to the municipality of Winterlingen within the borders of December 31, 1974. In the municipality are the abandoned , no longer existing villages Deutenbronn, Bierendorf, Nettendorf, Glashart and Weinstetten. Deutenbronn is located in the south of the former municipality of Benzingen. The field name has been mentioned since the 17th century. In the area of the former municipality and north of the village in a forest area are the corridors Bierendorf, Nettendorf and Glassert (deserted place Glashart), which are to be regarded as deserted areas. The Weinstetten desert lies in the southwest of the former municipality of Benzingen and in the southeast of the former municipality of Winterlingen.

geology

Limestone of the upper White Jura ( Quenstedt W δ / ε, Kimmeridgian 2–3) characterizes most of the municipality. Between Harthausen and Bitz, W ζ 2–3 (Lower Tithonium ) has been preserved in the Zollerngraben . Deposits of upper sea molasses near Harthausen and coral limestone near Winterlingen formed in the Miocene Molasse Sea , the coastline (cliff) of which marks the boundary between the Kuppenalb and flat alb.

The ridge between Benzingen and Blättringen consists of Juranagelfluh .

Surface waters are the exception on the karstified Alb plateau. Although several small springs arise along the ridge near Benzingen , their water seeps into the porous subsoil after a short run. Only the arid valleys, some of which are up to 100 m deep, are reminiscent of eras of geological history that are richer in water. Until the construction of the Alb water supply , the population was dependent on the Hülben . Only east of Winterlingen, where weathered clay blocks the runoff, there are two ponds and formerly a mill. The seeping water comes to light again in karst springs, for example in Büttnau on the eastern edge of the municipality .

history

Prehistory and early history

Archaeological finds show that the Winterlingen area has been continuously inhabited at least since the Bronze Age Barrows (around 1500 BC). The bronze axes and sickles , which were discovered in 1609 and can be seen today in the Württemberg State Museum, date from the late Urnfield Period (around 900 BC) . Several groups of burial mounds from the Hallstatt period (around 800 to 500 BC) are in the municipality, and four chalices from the late Celtic La Tène period were found. In ancient times, a road built by the Romans , the so-called Hochstraße , led from the upper Neckar via the Lautlingen castle through the municipality to the Donaufurt near Laiz . It branches off in today's municipal area to Bitz and further via Hermannsdorf to the Burladingen fort on the so-called Alblimes .

middle Ages

The place names Winterl ingen and Benz ingen attest to the establishment of these settlements in the phase of the Alemannic conquest. Harthausen is assigned to the expansion period. In 793 Winterlingen was mentioned in a deed of donation from Count Berthold to the St. Gallen monastery . In the 8th century the municipality belonged to the Gaugrafschaft Scherra , whose name is derived from an Old High German scorra (meaning rock , cf. Swedish archipelago ) and has been preserved in the Harthausen suffix to this day. It extended along the upper Danube from Sigmaringen to Tuttlingen and northwest of it about to the Albtrauf .

In the late Middle Ages , new forms of rule developed, and the lines of development of the three sub-towns separated.

Württemberg Winterlingen

The village of Winterlingen came into the possession of the Counts of Württemberg in 1367 . In 1403 they also acquired the rule of Schalksburg and thus rounded off their area on the western Alb. From now on Winterlingen belonged to the Balingen office . In 1534, the Reformation was introduced under Duke Ulrich .

During the First Coalition War , when the revolutionary army was in retreat in October 1796, troops of the French general Jean-Victor Moreau marched through the village on October 4th. When the administrative affiliation in the Kingdom of Württemberg, which had existed since 1806, was reformed in the course of 1810, Winterlingen came back to the Oberamt Balingen after a brief interlude at the Oberamt Ebingen. The administrative reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg led to membership in the Balingen district in 1938 . In 1945 Winterlingen (as well as Harthausen, Benzingen with leaf rings) became part of the French occupation zone and was thus assigned to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern , which was incorporated into the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.

On January 1, 1973, Winterlingen, as well as Harthausen, and Benzingen with leaf rings, which until then belonged to the Sigmaringen district , became part of the newly founded Zollernalb district.

Hohenzollern places

The history of the villages Benzingen and Harthausen, which were mentioned in documents in 1220 and 1275, was much more restless. Both were acquired in the 12th and 13th centuries by the Counts of Veringen , who sold their possessions to Rudolf von Habsburg in 1291 . The county of Veringen passed through different hands as a pledge until it came to the Counts, later princes, of Hohenzollern in 1535 . With the Principality of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen , the two municipalities assigned to the Oberamt Gammertingen , later the district of Sigmaringen , became Prussian in 1850 as part of the Hohenzollern Lands .

Between Winterlingen on the one hand, Benzingen and Harthausen on the other, a territorial border ran for centuries, which has also separated the denominations since the 16th century, Winterlingen in Württemberg became Protestant, the Hohenzollern villages remained Catholic.

Fürstenberg place

The Blättringen, which has belonged to Benzingen since around 1930, fared differently again, which became Fürstenberg in 1534 and only in Hohenzollern in 1806.

Incorporations

As part of the regional reform in Baden-Württemberg , Benzingen and Harthausen were incorporated into Winterlingen on January 1, 1975. The communities decided against participating in the then newly formed large district town of Albstadt. There is an agreed administrative community with the neighboring community of Straßberg .

Economy and Infrastructure

Commercial development began around 1860, with textile and metalworking industries in particular settling here.

Agriculture

Agriculture , which has dominated for centuries, was disadvantaged by the scarcity of water and the climate of the Alb plateau. In addition to agriculture and cattle breeding, fruit is also grown in Winterlingen. In 1878 there were 535 tall pear trees, 1059 apple trees, 577 plum and plum trees and 24 cherry trees in Winterlingen. There were pome fruit in 1888 Reinetten, Luiken, Lederäpfel; Pin pears, roast pears, honey pears and barrel pears. Three tree attendants, including one trained, are employed by the community. This also has a nursery. The fruit is usually eaten green, rarely dried or musted. The tall fruit trees were planted by the roadside and on private land. In the higher places, late blooming rough varieties. In the land register, the use of the hard shoulder in Württemberg was regulated by easements . In addition to King Wilhelm , the Brethren also gave away fruit trees. The orchards are not only so valuable because of their landscape-defining importance, but also because of their ecological wealth. They offer a habitat for many endangered animal and plant species and serve as a local recreation area. Above all, the old varieties, which are now almost unknown, turn out to be special aromatic carriers when they are further processed into fruit specialties. Today 77 varieties thrive in Winterlingen.
