history

Stetten am Kalten Markt around 1900
Overview map of Stetten am Kalten Markt around 1907

The place, which dates back to the Alemannic period, is mentioned in a document as Stetten by Kaltenmark as early as 799 as the property of the Reichenau monastery and came to the County of Hohenberg in the 13th century . In 1283, Stetten is referred to as a fortified place (" oppidum ") .

In 1343 the village came to the Lords of Jungingen , in 1350 to the Lords of Magenbuch . The state sovereignty was de facto with the House of Habsburg since 1381 . Under this Austrian suzerainty, Stetten flourished under the von Hausen family . They had held the village since 1432 and built the castle (today the town hall) in the 16th century.

During the Napoleonic period, Stetten was first part of Württemberg , then in 1810 to Baden . Today's Frohnstetten district came to Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen in 1806 . In 1910, the Heuberg military training area in Baden was set up in Stetten .

Housed in a former "United Children's Home" near the camp Heuberg on the site of the training area was one of the first concentration camp the Nazis established in Germany. It existed from March to December 1933. About 15,000 opponents of National Socialism were held here. B. the later first post-war chairman of the SPD Kurt Schumacher . In World War II the Heuberg was training camp so far as "unfit for military service" prevailing political opponents of the regime or criminals here in the "probation unit" mentioned Criminal Division 999 were trained for the war effort in special units, the withdrawal of regular Wehrmacht own troops share with precalculated Should cover annihilation. 39 such "probation soldiers" alone were murdered on the Heuberg within a year. Since 1983 a memorial erected by the SPD Baden-Württemberg by the sculptor Reinhard Bombsch near the three-step chapel has been commemorating the Nazi victims of the Heuberg. Since 1986 the victims of Penal Division 999 have been commemorated with a memorial stone at the Russian cemetery . A memorial stone with a rather veiled inscription commemorates an unknown number of Soviet prisoners of war who died in a prisoner-of- war camp that also existed on the site.

On March 1, 1945, the Luftwaffe pilot Lothar Sieber took off from the launch pad on the Ochsenkopf of the military training area for the first ever manned vertical take-off of a rocket aircraft , which killed him in the crash near the Nusplingen district. The aircraft was a so-called " Bachem Natter ". His remains were given military honors to the cemetery in Stetten a. k. M. buried. The grave still exists there today.

In 1966, the Bundeswehr location in Stetten am kalten Markt was expanded to include the Alb barracks .

When the district reform of the state of Baden-Württemberg came into force , the Baden district of Stockach was dissolved on January 1, 1973 , and Stetten was assigned to the district of Sigmaringen .

Name origin

There is a legend about the origin of the name of "Stetten am kalten Markt" , which says that a goat supposedly froze to death in the middle of June on the market square in Stetten, giving the place its name. The story of the goat frozen to death in June on the Stetten market square is a fairy tale . If a female domestic goat ever died while being marketed in Stetten, it was certainly not due to the “cold market”. It is more likely that the owner offered a sick animal for sale in the hope that it would not last until after it was sold.

Incorporations

Nusplingen was forcibly incorporated by the National Socialists on April 1, 1936, and Storzingen was added on January 1, 1972 at its own request. Today's community was re-formed on January 1, 1975 by the union of the communities Stetten am kalten Markt, Glashütte (Baden) and Frohnstetten.

Museums

Replica of the Natter M23 in the military history collection in Stetten am kalten Markt

On September 21, 2013, the military history collection of the Stetten location opened on the kalten Markt in the building of the former officers' dining establishment and is now open to the public. The military history collection of the Stetten a. k. M. in the Heuberg camp was previously an official facility of the Bundeswehr with 700 square meters of exhibition space, which showed over 90 years of military history of the garrison from the imperial era to the Bundeswehr. Uniforms, vehicles, pictures, books and more are on display. In addition to a replica of the adder hanging in the starting frame , the history of probation unit 999 was also presented in detail. An inspection was only possible after presenting the identity card at the guard of the Alb barracks and this only on selected days of the year.

The fire brigade museum has been located in the former office building on Hardtstrasse since 2018 , together with the traditional cabinet of the local German Red Cross . The fire department presents an extensive collection of historical fire department uniforms, helmets and badges from many European countries as well as fire department technical exhibits. The German Red Cross comes up with exhibits, badges and documents from the development of the medical system, but especially from the more than 100-year history of this local association. The collections can be viewed by appointment.

societies

Many associations have their headquarters in Stetten. One of the most important for the region and for the Obere Donau Nature Park is the Ruinenschutz Oberes Donautal e. V. The association was founded in 1975 by Erhard Grüninger as a kind of sponsorship association for all castle ruins in the Danube valley. A goal too ambitious given the cost. That is why the association immediately devoted itself to the renovation of the Falkenstein ruins . In the 1980s the association had almost 250 members from all over Germany. Between 1977 and 1989 the chairman at the time, Grüninger, was very committed to the renovation of the Falkenstein. After the restructuring was completed, the association was not dissolved, but existed passively and had been inactive since Grüninger's illness and death in 2000. The last general meeting took place in 1993. The association was reactivated on May 5, 2006 and made operational again because some renovation work had to be carried out on the Falkenstein ruins and the long-planned signage should be tackled. With the reactivation, Wilhelm Rößler, former district chairman and functionary of the Swabian Alb Association , was made a member of the board. In addition to the renovation and signage of the Falkenstein ruins (2006/2007), the association continued to work on the renovation of the Hausen ruins (2007/2008) and, since 2009, the Weckenstein castle ruins .

Buildings

  • The church of St. Mauritius in Stetten is adorned with one of the most powerful Baroque altar pieces in the region. The current parish church was consecrated on November 9, 1631. Joachim the Younger, Freiherr zu Hausen and Stetten, who started construction in 1624, is considered to be the builder. The ceiling beam, which rests on thresholds on the outer walls, dates from the construction time around 1630. The tower foundations of today's church were previously the choir of a previous church. This was also promoted by the Lords of Hausen, a coat of arms of the Lords of Hausen with the year 1486 suggests this. In 1993/94 frescoes from a cycle of pictures of the Way of the Cross were secured in the lower part of the tower. The paint layer was probably applied directly to the plaster with organic binders in the 14th and 15th centuries. The ceiling beams of the old nave from 1630 were 80 percent damaged by dry rot in the support area and had to be replaced in 2010. The church with its baroque belfry has stairs with medieval wedge steps.
  • The Protestant Hindenburg Memorial Church (“Blue Church”) built in 1938 is the work of the Protestant church architect Otto Bartning .
  • The three-step chapel is on the edge of the Heuberg military training area and is known as a small place of pilgrimage. According to a story, it owes its name to the strange experience of a truck driver, in which Jesus himself is said to have driven away blasphemous rabble. The building dates from the 17th century and has 15 wayside shrines with stations of the cross.
  • The cemetery or Sebastian chapel in Frohnstetten is from 1938 and has a neo-Gothic altar, a crucifix by the sculptor Alfons Marmon and sculptures by the sculptor Strüb.
  • The St. Sylvester Church is located in the Frohnstetten district . It dates from 1617, has a funeral house and a rococo altar. A memorial to commemorate the war dead is located on the Hilb.
  • The Storzingen Church of St. Zeno has a high altar panel and other paintings by Andreas Meinrad von Ow .
  • The Stetten Castle of the Lords of Hausen is a late Renaissance building and today houses the town hall of the community. It shows up with a magnificent staircase in the form of an auditorium. The town hall and its stairs are often the backdrop and stage for cultural open-air events.
  • The so-called Goreth House , at Schlosshof 2, is a valuable Renaissance building from the 16th century according to architectural studies and once belonged to the ensemble of buildings of the castle and is located directly opposite. In 2008, after long negotiations, the municipality succeeded in buying the building. It had seen many structural changes over the centuries. The upper floor, where valuable stucco ceilings and baroque walls have been found, is completely preserved. The original roof structure is also well preserved. The stairwell runs through an attached tower with an attached helmet roof . After the renovation work began in 2010, the garage extensions have now been removed, the windows and entrances replaced and the entire building plastered. In January 2011, the painting work began on the exterior facade.
  • The Schauenburg is a castle that was destroyed as early as 1430.
  • The Gasthaus Kreuz is an almost 500 year old half-timbered house in the center of Stetten. It was once the official residence of the Obervogte and the guest house of the von Hausen rulers, later owned by the Fuggers, but after a period of vacancy and decay it was saved from demolition in 1986 by a citizens' initiative.
  • The Güring'sche Hardthof lies between Nusplingen and Untermeien . The well-known horse breeding company has produced award-winning sport horses.

The Skiclub 1968 e. V. Stetten am kalten Markt maintains a ski slope with a lift and floodlights. The ski sports facility also has a fun park with a halfpipe, ski jump and wave swings. There is another trail three kilometers in length.
