history
Traces of settlement were found in the area from prehistoric times. Remains of pile dwellings from the Neolithic were found in the Egelseemoor near the Ruhestetten district . Finds of stone axes and vessels in the Glashütte district also suggest that as early as the end of the third millennium BC BC and in the late Neolithic period people lived in this area. Early Celtic burial mounds in the vicinity of Rothenlachen, which were excavated in the 19th century, date from the late Hallstatt period .
The place was in the early Middle Ages in the area of the Goldineshuntare , then in the Gau Ratoldesbuch, later in the county of Sigmaringen .
The village was first mentioned when the Staufer King Philip of Swabia sold the Vogtei Wald for 30 marks and the Vogtei Hippetsweiler to the von Fronhofen brothers. This undated sale must have taken place in 1208 at the latest, because that was the year the king died. Soon afterwards the brothers sold the forest to the Lords of Balbe, who in turn sold it to the imperial ministerial Burkhard von Weckenstein for 55 marks . He founded the Wald monastery here in 1212 for his two sisters Judinta and Ita .
In 1783, Wald became a province of Upper Austria .
The history of the village ran parallel to that of the monastery. Until that year, the monastic rule, which was under the aegis of the Salem Imperial Abbey , also included the towns of Walbertsweiler, Kappel, Glashütte, Otterswang , Reischach, Gaisweiler , Weihwang , Tautenbronn , Hippetsweiler, Riedetsweiler, Rothenlachen and Ruhestetten. During the secularization due to the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , the monastery was dissolved in 1806 and its territory fell to the Principality of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen . The monastic community existed until the beginning of the 1850s and lived on the Prince's pensions.
Immediately after the principality of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen took possession of the dominion of the Wald monastery, a princely upper office was established in Wald with its seat in the monastery buildings. When the principality fell to Prussia as Hohenzollernsche Land in 1850 , the Hohenzollern Oberamt Wald became Prussian until it was abolished in 1861. In 1862 it was incorporated into the Sigmaringen Oberamt , which in 1925 became the Sigmaringen district .
During the time of National Socialism , one of five camps of the female Reich Labor Service (RAD) was located in Wald in the then Prussian-Hohenzollern district of Sigmaringen. Part of the monastery building was made available for this purpose from 1938. After the Second World War , the French occupation forces set up a camp there for displaced persons in 1945.
Incorporations
In the course of the municipal reform in Baden-Württemberg , nine surrounding municipalities were incorporated into Wald. So on January 1, 1971 Hippetsweiler, Riedetsweiler and Rothenlachen came to the community. Reischach followed on June 1, 1972, and Sentenhart, formerly in Baden, on January 1, 1973 . The series of incorporations was completed on January 1, 1975 with the incorporation of Glashütte, Kappel, Ruhestetten and Walbertsweiler.
religion
The majority of the population of the community is Roman Catholic, as in all places that were formerly part of Hohenzollern.
Evangelical Christians in Wald belong to the Evangelical Church Community of Ostrach-Wald in the church district of Balingen . A curiosity, because the municipality of Pfullendorf lies between the political municipality of Wald and Ostrach . The structure of the Evangelical Church Community reflects the turmoil of the political landscape in southern Germany before the establishment of the German Empire. The free imperial city of Pfullendorf was added to Baden in 1805 and is therefore today part of the Evangelical Church in Baden . The Evangelical Church in Hohenzollern joined the Evangelical Church in Württemberg in 1950 . The structure of new Protestant parishes in Upper Swabia in the 1950s, as in Ostrach, followed the pattern. Due to the refugees from the east, the number of Protestant Christians in small congregations became large enough to form their own congregations. Ostrach and Wald, historically part of Hohenzollern, therefore came together as one parish. There is no Evangelical church building of its own in Wald. Divine service is celebrated in the chapter house of the Catholic monastery church of St. Bernhard.

In a split shield in front in black a double row of red and silver slanting bar (coat of arms of the Cistercian order), in the back in silver on a green three-mountain a red diamond ( talking coat of arms of the founder). In order not to violate the heraldic color rule, the colors of the donor's coat of arms were reversed.

Buildings
- Wald Monastery : The Cistercian monastery was founded in 1212 by the Staufer Reich Ministerial Burkard von Weckenstein for his sisters Judintha and Ita, but was almost completely destroyed in the Thirty Years War . The current building and the monastery church are Baroque buildings from the second half of the 17th century. Today, the Kloster Wald home school is attached to the Benedictine convent of St. Lioba , which unites the girls' boarding school, grammar school and training workshops. A viewing is therefore not possible. The convent hall has a stucco ceiling and ceiling frescoes.
- St. Bernhard monastery church : The monastery church, which was built in the 13th century as a three-aisled Gothic church, was redesigned from 1696 to 1698 by Jos Beer from Vorarlberg as a single-aisled baroque rococo church with a nun's gallery that extends far into the nave and the beautiful wrought iron lattice on its parapet . The Upper Swabian organ builder Johann Georg Aichgasser added a splendid organ in 1751 , which is the only one that he has completely preserved. The Aichgasser organ with its 1180 organ pipes was renovated in 1926, 1956 and most recently in 2008/09. The organ has doors on the richly gilded organ front. On the organ are a jubilant chorus of angels with backenaufplusternden angel current Petern and two kettle drums beating Engelsputto . They are framed by three wood-carved cartouches of the coats of arms of the monastery founder, the order and a coat of arms of the abbess Maria Dioskora von Thurn and Valsassina adorned with the golden imperial eagle. She once had the church decorated with the airy, light rococo style and the baroque style surrounded by putti. The stucco work is done by Johann Jakob Schwarzmann . The Gothic crucifix is dated to 1150. It can be visited.
- In Wald there is also the cemetery chapel and the wayside chapel with a crucifixion group.
- In the district of Kappel there is the St. Martin chapel from 1716. Its renaissance altar dates back to 1568. The equipment still includes valuable figures.
- The chapel of St. Agatha from the 18th century is located in Reischach.
- The Sentenhart Church of St. Remigius with its staggered church tower was probably built as a fortified church around 1300. The nave is a later new building.
- The St. Gallus Church in Walbertsweiler is a modern, functional building with a simple interior from 1961, after the tower of the previous church collapsed.
- There are two listed chapels in the Hippetsweiler district: The St. Wolfgang Chapel (Pfullendorfer Straße 21) from 1620 (a plastered solid building with a polygonal apse and roof turret) and the Marien Gedächtniskapelle (Pfullendorfer Straße 49) from 1947 (a path chapel / chapel shrine at Landesstraße 212 between Hippetsweiler and Gaisweiler; plastered solid construction).
- There are large chapels in Riedetsweiler (St. Antonius), in Rothenlachen (Marienkapelle), in Glashütte (St. Josef) and in Ruhestetten (Dreifaltigkeitskapelle).
- Ten Villages Hall: A multi-purpose hall that is used for festive events and school sports and was named after the ten villages , i.e. forest itself and the nine districts.
- Field crosses: More than 50 field crosses are known in the community of Wald.
nature
Weiherwanderweg
In and around Wald there were once 14 fish ponds, which were created in connection with the strict fasting requirement of the Cistercian women in the 13th and 14th centuries. All of the ponds in the forest were connected to one another and could thus be regulated. From these ponds the nuns obtained the fish for their livelihood. Based on the recommendation of a commission from Upper Austria, these ponds were drained for (fishing) economic reasons and converted into litter meadows in the 18th and 19th centuries - only two ponds remained. In connection with the 800-year anniversary of the village, the five-kilometer-long pond hiking trail was laid out in 2008 , which connects the former ponds in the vicinity as a circular route. The path leads from the monastery pond to the remaining wall of the grid pond at Anneneschstraße and over the Schafbrühl pond to the former Breitenweiher between Langgaß and Süßlöchle.
Tanzlinde
On November 8, 2008, a 35-year-old and more than seven-meter-high dancing linden tree was planted on the festival meadow and blessed by the local pastor. In the anniversary year of “800 years of the forest”, a rust-free “history urn” with events from the history of the community was dug into the root ball and an information board on the nationwide history of Tanzlinden was unveiled. With good care of the branches that support the dance floor, it could be a good 50 years before this dance floor can be danced on. During the time of the monastery there was a court linden tree in Wald for the execution of sentences; it is recorded in the monastery plan from 1680.
Sports
In winter, the forest trail, which is around five kilometers long, is prepared for cross-country skiing in the municipality . It runs across the meadows to the cemetery, past the Riedle to the Walbertsweiler sports field and in a large loop along the forest back to the cemetery. Entry points are at the Sägeweg, at the cemetery (parking), in the Riedle and at the sports field in Walbertsweiler (parking). Small bridges are laid over streams and ditches.
