The son of the Franco-Flemish composer Rogier Michael (1552–1619) and brother of the organists Christian Michael (around 1593–1637) and Samuel (around 1597–1632) had been a band singer at the Dresden court since 1601 . After attending Schulpforta from 1609 , Tobias Michael studied theology in Leipzig and Wittenberg . In 1619 he became conductor of the princes of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen in the Trinity Church in Sondershausen. After a devastating city fire in 1621, which also completely destroyed the church, Michael got a job as city clerk.

In 1631 he became the successor of Johann Hermann Schein Thomaskantor of the Thomasschule in Leipzig . His successor there was Sebastian Knüpfer in 1657 .

Two volumes of motets and sacred concerts by Michael have come down to us under the title "Musikalische Seelenlust" (1634–1637) as well as six- to eight-part occasional works (mostly concert motets for weddings and funerals). The style corresponded to the Venetian School, which was widespread in Germany at the time .

Tobias Michael composed the motet for his own funeral several years before his death.
