Johann Gottfriedschicht (born September 29, 1753 in Reichenau (Saxony) , † February 16, 1823 in Leipzig ) was a German composer , Gewandhauskapellmeister and Thomaskantor .

Life

Shift studied law in Leipzig from 1776 . He worked as an accompanist and violinist in the concerts organized by Johann Adam Hiller ( Großes Concert ), and later also in the Leipzig Gewandhaus . In 1785 he took over the position of Gewandhaus Kapellmeister. A year later he married Constanza Alessandra Oktavia Valdesturia, who died three years later. Of the four daughters from the marriage, three died prematurely, with the exception of Henriette Wilhelmine.

Johann Gottfriedschicht was also music director of the Neukirche and in 1802 co-founder and first director of the Leipziger Singakademie , which was the first mixed amateur choir in the city and also the second oldest singing academy based on the Berlin model, the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin . He held the position of Gewandhaus Kapellmeister until 1810. After that he was Thomaskantor until his death in 1823. One of his students was the composer Carl Gottlieb Hering .

His main work is the great chorale book from 1819. He also wrote masses , motets , cantatas , a setting of the 100th  Psalm , four Te Deum , a piano concerto , the oratorio Das Ende des Gerechten with libretto by Friedrich Rochlitz , sonatas and capriccio .
