Herbert Albert

Herbert Albert (born December 26, 1903 in Lausigk , † September 15, 1973 in Bad Reichenhall ) was a German pianist and conductor .

Life

He studied in Bremen, Hamburg and Leipzig. After training with Karl Muck in Hamburg and with Hermann Grabner and Robert Teichmüller in Leipzig, Albert first made his debut as a pianist, but quickly turned to the career of a conductor. From 1926 to 1934 he was successively Kapellmeister in Rudolstadt, Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden. In 1934 he was appointed general music director in Wiesbaden, where he introduced the international music festivals. Then he moved to the Stuttgart State Opera as General Music Director in 1937 and to the Breslau Opera in 1944.

After the war he was Gewandhaus Kapellmeister in Leipzig from 1946 to 1948 . In 1947 he conducted the world premiere of the orchestral variations on a theme by Paganini by Boris Blacher . 1950–1952 he worked as general music director in Graz and from 1952–1963 at the Nationaltheater Mannheim , whose new building was opened on January 13, 1957 with Weber's Freischütz under his direction.

From 1963 onwards, Herbert Albert, an excellent pianist, often performed the solo part in piano concerts and conducted the orchestra from the piano.
