ORP Wodnik (251) is a training ship that has been in service with the Polish Navy since 1976 .
draft
The ship was built at the Nord shipyard in Gdańsk . The design is of the built at the same shipyard survey vessels of the Moma class derived (Project 861). The Wodnik is the lead ship in a series of five training ships from Project 888 and gave the Wodnik class its name.
For use as a hospital ship , the armament was removed in 1990, a hospital with 150 beds was installed and a platform for light helicopters was built. Because of the lack of medical equipment and diagnostic technology, the narrow corridors and the susceptibility to swell, the Wodnik did not meet the requirements of Article 26 of the Geneva Convention II and was again armed as a training ship in 1992.
commitment
The Wodnik is used by the Polish Navy primarily as a training ship, but also as a supply ship for speedboats and submarines . The ship is led by a commander with the rank of Komandor Porucznik ( corvette captain ).
The ship is mainly in the Baltic Sea and North Sea and has repeatedly undertaken training trips to the Mediterranean . The following uses are also known:
- During the Second Gulf War from 1990 to 1991 as a hospital ship in the Persian Gulf .
- Between June 1 and June 12, 2000, participation in an international rescue exercise for a pro forma cruise ship that crashed off Iceland .
