Motueka is a city in the Tasman District on the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

Motueka is probably an abbreviation of the word " Motuweka ". In the Māori language , " motu " means wood or a group of trees and " weka " is the name of a bird species in New Zealand, see Wekaralle (Gallirallus australi). Another interpretation of the word “ motu ” equates this with “island”. The name of the city could be translated as "island with bush and Weka birds".

geography

The city is located around 28 km northwest of Nelson in Tasman Bay , laid out on the alluvial land of the Motueka River , which flows into Tasman Bay around 3 km north of the city center . Around 5 km to the west rise the Wharepapa / Arthur Range , which is up to 1809  m high .
