Motueka is a city in the Tasman District on the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
Motueka is probably an abbreviation of the word " Motuweka ". In the Māori language , " motu " means wood or a group of trees and " weka " is the name of a bird species in New Zealand, see Wekaralle (Gallirallus australi). Another interpretation of the word “ motu ” equates this with “island”. The name of the city could be translated as "island with bush and Weka birds".
