The Motueka River is a river in the north of the South Island of New Zealand . It rises in the form of two separate source rivers, the Right Branch Motueka River and the Left Branch Motueka River on Mount Red Hill in Mount Richmond Forest Park ( Marlborough region ), 60 kilometers south of Nelson . It then flows for 120 km, first through rugged hill country, then through the flatter area southwest of Tasman Bay .

The river passes Golden Downs in its course , is crossed by State Highway 6 at Kohatu and continues via Mararewa , Tapawera , Woodstock , Pokororo , Ngatimoti , Ngatimoti and Pangatotara . Just before its confluence, State Highway 60 crosses it and then flows north of Motueka into Tasman Bay.

Right tributaries are the Stanley Borok and Dove Rivers , left tributaries are the Motupiko River , Wangapeka River , Baton River , Pearse River, and Pokororo River .

The river flows into Tasman Bay near the city of Motueka ( Tasman region ). It is used for rainbow trout fishing , rafting and canoeing .
