Kohatu is a town in the Tasman District on the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
Kohatu means stone or rock in the Māori language .
geography
The settlement is located around 41 km southwest of Nelson in the valley of the Motueka River and southeast of the confluence of the Motupiko River in the Motueka River .
history
The settlement received a railway connection to Nelson through the section of the Nelson Section opened on March 2, 1899 to Motupiko . After several extensions to the Gowan Bridge , the line was finally closed on September 3, 1955 and then dismantled.

The settlement lives from farming and fruit growing.
Infrastructure
Road traffic
The New Zealand State Highway 6 runs through Kohatu and connects the settlement with Nelson in the northeast and with the West Coast in the west.
The Motueka Valley Highway , the former State Highway 61 , branches off from Kohatu to the north and connects the settlement with Motueka, which is about 38 km northeast . The road also provides access to Kahurangi National Park .
