The New Zealand State Highway 60 ( State Highway 60 or SH 60 for short ) is a national highway on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The highway has a length of 116 km and connects the northwestern part of the South Island to the highway network and the city of Nelson . The road is entirely in the Tasman region . It serves as a connection to the Abel Tasman National Park and Farewell Spit and is therefore also of touristic importance. The road begins in Richmond south of Nelson and ends in Collingwood .

Routing

The highway branches off in the southeast of Richmond from the New Zealand State Highway 6 and runs in a northwest direction over the Waimea Plains through the alluvial land of the Waimea River . The SH 60 runs past Mapua into the Motueka Valley through the small town of Motueka . At Riwaka a road branches off to Kaiteriteri and the Abel Tasman National Park , while the SH 60 turns west. The road ascends to Takaka Hill with Eureka Bend 791  m above sea level. From here the Kahurangi National Park is east . Then the road leads down into the valley of the Takaka River and passes the place Takaka . The highway then follows the coast of Golden Bay in a north-northwest direction to its end point in Collingwood .

Until the Ruby Bay Bypass was opened in 2010 , the SH 60 also followed a coastal route near Mapua .
