The New Zealand State Highway 94 ( State Highway 94 or SH 94 for short ) is a trunk road of national importance on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The trunk road has a length of 258 km and extends from the southern part of the South Island to the west coast. The two-lane road (one for each direction of travel) over its entire length connects State Highway 1 in Gore with Milford Sound on the west coast of the South Island. The road leads across the Southland region .

Routing

The State Highway 94 begins at the branch State Highway 1 in downtown Gore , about 270 meters west of the Mataura River . From the roundabout, the road initially runs north, only to bend to north-north-west after leaving the town and later to turn north-west. On its approximately 60 km to Lumsden , where the SH 94 meets the New Zealand State Highway 6 , the road passes the small villages of Mandeville , Riversdale and Balfour . From Lumsden , the SH 94 runs north on the same route as SH 6 , then bends west for a total of 2.5 km and then west-northwest towards Mossburn . In the center of Mossburn , the New Zealand State Highway 97 branches off to the northeast and, as Mossburn Five Rivers Road, forms a cross-connection to SH 6, which runs further north . Behind Mossburn , the SH 94 leaves the Oreti River on the right and moves north along the up to 1634  m high Takitimu Mountains and previously crossing the Mararoa River and Whitestone River , towards the next largest city Te Anau . Shortly before the city limits of Te Anau , the New Zealand State Highway 99 branches off to the southwest from SH 94 . After a straight road of almost one kilometer within Te Anau , the SH 94 makes a 90 degree bend to the northeast and follows the road on the west side of Lake Te Anau to Te Anau Downs , where it bends at a right angle to the east then after 2.5 km to the northeast, plunge into the valley of the Eglinton River and follow the river to Lake Gunn and Lake Fergus . Then the road between the mountains of the Darran Mountains in the northeast and the Wick Mountain in the southwest presses towards the Homer Tunnel . The road tunnel opened in 1954 crosses the saddle for a length of 1.24 km between the 1931  m high Mount McPerson on the north side and the 1965  m high Mount Moir on the south side, which close the valley to the west. On the west side of the saddle the valley of the Cleddau River opens up, which accompanies the SH 94 up to 1.5 km before its end point in the parking lot to the excursion boats on Milford Sound .
