The New Zealand State Highway 96 ( State Highway 96 or SH 96 for short ) is a national highway on the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The trunk road has a length of 92 km and is located in the southern part of the South Island. The two-lane road (one for each direction of travel) over its entire length connects State Highway 1 south of Mataura , with State Highway 6 near Winton and the mining town of Ohai further west. The road runs right through Southland .
Routing
The State Highway 96 begins at the junction of State Highway 1 , 1.5 km south-southwest of the town center of Mataura . From there the road runs through farmland in a westerly direction, passes the small settlements of Te Tipua , Hedgehope , Springhills and Bronws and meets the SH 6 north of the center in the small town of Winton . The SH 96 divides this around 1.7 km in a northerly direction until it can branch off to the west. After a further north-westerly course over two branches, the SH 96 reaches the place of Nightcaps , which is characterized by open- cast mining, and continues from there to the small mining village a little further northeast. The SH 96 ends there .
