Mataura is a small town in the Gore District of the Southland regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The place is about 13 km southwest of Gore and 45 kilometers north of Invercargill . The Mataura River flows through Mataura after the place was named.
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 1,509 inhabitants, 3.3% more than in the 2006 census.
economy
There is a slaughterhouse in Mataura . Until August 2000, the place was also the location of a large paper and pulp mill, which was then shut down; a restart is considered unlikely.
Infrastructure
Road traffic
The New Zealand State Highway 1 runs through Mataura and connects the town with Gore in the northeast and Invercargill in the southwest. South of the village, the New Zealand State Highway 96 branches off from State Highway 1 and connects Mataura with Winton, 42 km to the west .
Rail transport
The southern part of the South Island Main Trunk Railway runs through the village . Until the end of passenger traffic in 2002, Mataura was a stop on the Southerner , since then only goods traffic has been moved on the route.

The debut novel overkill in Dunedin living crime writer Vanda Symon is in Mataura .
