Justin Warren Marshall , MNZM (* 5. August 1973 in Mataura , New Zealand ) is a former New Zealand rugby union player at the position of the scrum Halbs and since end of his career in rugby commentator for Sky Television in New Zealand. Marshall was used in 81 internationals for the All Blacks , which is a record for a scrum half. He scored 24 attempts and thus also holds the record for a player in his position.

Career

Marshall began his sporting career in 1992 with Southland Rugby in the National Provincial Championship (NPC) and moved to Canterbury Rugby Football Union after three years . Also in 1995 he was part of the national team for the first time. Marshall was 22 years old when he made his debut against France (37-2 win). A year later he made his debut in the newly created Super 12 for the Crusaders after the 1996 professionalization of the previous pure amateur sport rugby union . In 1997 Marshall was the captain of the national team for four games on the tour in Great Britain and Ireland. At the world championship he reached 3rd place.

During his time in New Zealand he won the New Zealand provincial championship with Canterbury in 1997, 2001 and 2004 and defended the Ranfurly Shield 23 times from September 23, 2000 to October 11, 2003 and 14 times from September 5, 2004 to September 24, 2006. With the Crusaders he also won the Super Rugby title five times (1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005). In 2002 the Crusaders had a "perfect season"; they remained unbeaten in all preliminary round matches, in the semi-finals and in the final. In 2003 and 2004 they were only defeated in the final.

With the All Blacks, he won the annual Tri Nations five times (1996, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2003) and the 2003 Bledisloe Cup , which they lost in 1998, back from Australia . The New Zealanders defend this uninterruptedly to this day. He also took part in the 1999 World Cup in Wales and the 2003 World Cup in Australia . Both times the All Blacks surprisingly lost as favorites in the semi-finals against France and Australia respectively. In 2005 he won all three games with the national team against the British and Irish Lions .

In 2005 Marshall signed with the Leeds Tykes in England . When this club was relegated at the end of the season, he moved to the Ospreys in Wales for two years in 2006 . With the Ospreys, Marshall became champions in the Celtic League . After the contract expired, he moved to France to the Montpellier Hérault RC . There he was suspended after he refused to play as a substitute in a championship game. He then left the French club and joined the Saracens in England in 2009.

At the end of the 2009/10 season he announced his retirement from active rugby and went back to New Zealand, where he is now a rugby commentator on New Zealand's pay-TV channel Sky Network Television.
