Richmond is a city in the Tasman District on the South Island of New Zealand . It is the seat of the Tasman District Council .

Origin of name

Richmond was founded in 1842 by the settler Geoge Snow and named by him after his hometown, London Borough of Richmond upon Thames in England .

geography

The city is located about 11 km southwest of downtown Nelson at the southern end of Waimea Inlet , which has access to Tasman Bay to the north .

population

In the 2013 census, the city had 12,276 inhabitants, 4.8% more than in the 2006 census.

economy

In the area around Richmond preferred agriculture and fruit production is operated. Wood processing companies have settled in the city. The city is also known for its artisans, especially potters who use clay and minerals from the surrounding area for their creations.

Infrastructure

Road traffic

The New Zealand State Highway 6 runs through the northwestern part of Richmond and connects the city directly with the northeastern bordering Stoke and the Nelson behind it . In the opposite direction, the highway leads inland via Hope and Brightwater . At the western end of the city, the New Zealand State Highway 60 branches off from State Highway 6 in the direction of Motueka to the northwest.

Shipping

Since the Waimea Inlet is not suitable for shipping, the city has to switch to the port of Nelson .

Architectural monuments

As of July 2013, eight buildings in the area are registered as historical monuments by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust .
