Hope is a town in the Tasman District on the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The place was named "Ranzau" by the German settlers after the sponsor of the settlement, Count Kuno zu Rantzau-Breitenburg . Later, the place was by Jane Hope , a granddaughter of the Duke of Hamilton , acquired the here lands in Hope renamed.
geography
The village is located in the alluvial land of the Waimea River on New Zealand State Highway 6 about 3 km southwest of Richmond and 21 km southwest Nelson . Neighboring towns are Richmond in the northeast and Brightwater 6.5 km southeast. Between Hope and Richmond , the New Zealand State Highway 60 branches off northwards towards Motueka and Collingwood .
history
The place goes back to a settlement financed by Count Kuno zu Rantzau-Breitenburg , which was carried out under the New Zealand Company . The German settlers came to New Zealand in 1843 on the Skjold ship . Gravestones from that time can be found in the cemetery of St John's Church , as well as street names in the place, such as Ranzau Road , which refer to the history of the German settlers.
