Collingwood is a small town in the Tasman District on the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The place was named in 1859 after the British Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, 1st Baron Collingwood , but was initially named Gibbstown after its establishment , after the local landowner William Gibbs .
geography
Collingwood is about 80 km northwest of Nelson in the confluence of the Aorere River in the Golden Bay . The estuary forms a river delta, which is located south of the Ruataniwha Inlet and reaches the Burnett Range in the northwest .
history
After the town was founded, over 1,500 prospectors came to the area's gold rush in 1857 to try their luck in the Aorere River valley . The run caused the government of Nelson Province to re-plan the town as a city, name it Collingwood and propose it as the capital of New Zealand. But the residents of Gibbstown cared so little that the plans were abandoned again.
After the place was completely destroyed by a fire in 1859, it was rebuilt and now renamed Collingwood . More large fires were to follow in 1904 and 1967, after which the place was rebuilt.

The place is connected to the New Zealand State Highway 60 coming from the south, which ends in the place.
Education
The local school, Collingwood Area School , is a so-called composite school for 250 pupils, which is both elementary school, secondary school and adult education facility for the greater Collingwood area .
tourism
Due to its proximity to the Kahurangi National Park and Farewell Spit , the place is a destination for ecotourism , but because of its isolated location it is off the well-known tourist routes.
