The Takaka River is a river in the northwest of New Zealand's South Island .

It runs 70 km to the north and flows northwest of the city of Takaka into the Golden Bay . Important tributaries are the Cobb, Waingaro and Anatoki.

The river is used as bathing water in summer, the local authorities give 50-100 visitors per day during the peak period over Christmas and New Year, otherwise 20-40 visitors per day.

On January 17, 2007, it was reported that the river was one of a growing number of rivers in the South Island suffering from an invasion of the diatom Didymosphenia geminata .
