Riwaka is a village in the Tasman District on the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The name of the village is an abbreviation of the term “ Riuwaka ” , which in the Māori language is divided into “ riu ” for interior or hollow and “ waka ” for canoe.
geography
The village is located about 5 km north of Motueka and about 2 km west of the mouth of the Riwaka River in Tasman Bay . The New Zealand State Highway 60 leads directly through the village on its route to the northwest and connects it directly with the city of Motueka to the south .
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 867 inhabitants, 1.8% more than in the 2006 census.
economy
The main sources of income of the village are agriculture with fruit and hops growing, as well as wood processing and activities in a factory for lime production.

- Keith Holyoake (1904-1983), former Prime Minister of New Zealand lived in Riwaka when he was young.
