The Riwaka River is a river in the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand . It has a length of 20 km and flows into the Tasman Bay near the city of Riwaka , 10 km north of Motueka .
The valleys of the Riwaka and the nearby Takaka River form part of the pass that is the only road between Tasman Bay and Golden Bay .
Over part of its course, the river runs underground through a series of karst caves in limestone. In the so-called The Riwaka Resurgence it comes to the surface again. This place is known by tourists and cave divers as the water is always crystal clear and cold even in the heat of midsummer.
